I don't understand the rug by the door on the inside because you're not going to wipe your feet before you go out, right? I'd put a good quality outdoor rug on the other side of the door, and maybe a clever sign that says 'Wipe Thy Feet'. For the inside I'd love to see a beautiful round rug, with a smallish round table and basket which could be used for keys, mail, etc. on a temporary basis.

I completely agree Charleee, that there is no reason to have a rug on the inside of the door! I also dislike the tiles though so wouldn't mind covering them up! I am not sure how to make the space look nice. I love the idea of a little table or bench however I am not sure where I can put one. We have a little space where the staircase is however that spot is a little awkwardly shaped and we currently have an old grandfather clock there which doesn't work. Where would you put the round rug? Did you mean a small one at the door?

I can see the floors as hardwood or large slate tiles. Also update the closet door as well as the entry door that allows more light in the house. You may also consider adding a light fixture to the space.
