I have a 23 year old drip irrigation layout. The original layout was set for young trees/ shrubs and some is mixed with the lawn. Now the proximity and size of the emitters is mostly ineffective and inappropriate for the size and age of the trees. In troubleshooting my tree issues, I've read the mature trees need less frequent, deep watering while the shrubs require a little more frequent and shallower watering during our hot, dry summers. The tender plantings interspersed with the shrubs and trees need even more frequent watering. The problem is, one station and long run of tubing connects all of these different plants that are all mixed and at various places along the run. I've read that these short, frequent waterings may actually be hurting my trees, but I don't know how to get around that. And by the same token, deep watering my small plantings is a big waste of water. Short of bypassing all the trees from the drip system and manually deep watering them (there are numerous), can someone suggest a solution?
