another backsplash question

I am using hex mother of pearl tiles for my backsplash.

they are going counter to ceiling behind the cooktop. It is a 6ft wide by 5ft tall space, There will be a vent hood in stainless there too, but no upper cabinets in that space. On the opposite wall, I have a large window, and they will be around the window, up to the ceiling there too.

My question is, should I do a decorative insert behind the cooktop? and a band around the whole room to match the insert? I was not thinking of contrast, but maybe a different cut of mop or some iridescent glass tile... or maybe marble to tie into the counters... I cannot afford the Artistic Tile waterjet mosaics, I was quoted over $200/sq ft, and if I do it, I think I need 6 sq ft for the cooktop alone. So I want to be in the $50 max per sq ft range. $30 would be nice too, lol.

Or just keep it simple with the hex mother of pearl?

or, one more idea... a counter to ceiling panel right behind the actual cooktop and vent, so 36", Then 18" on either side of the hex. And prob just the hex everywhere else.

@dcward89 I do kind of think that too. I fear I have the more is better idea right now, but I know that is not always, or even usually, true,

I like your idea of an accent panel, but if you do one, of say, square MOP tile, use the same manufacturer, same thickness, same shade. Definitely don't do an accent stripe around the room. Yucky that. Dated, too.

Another option would be a solid stainless panel to the ceiling behind the range, if only for ease of cleaning. This is the part of the bs that gets dirtiest and will be cleaned most often. I don't know how durable the MOP finish is, but I think of it as a little delicate. Plus the less grout in that zone, the better.

Put me in the "less is more" camp. That MOP BS needs to shine all on its own. I wouldn't do anything else. It's going to be gorgeous. ;)

I would keep it all the same. I'm a little confused though. I need more coffee. So are you saying will you have no backsplash, just painted walls, everywhere else where you have no upper cabinets? Just doing the two strips above cooktop and around window?

Agreed. The mosaic is busy enough. No other accents needed. Love the tile to the ceiling behind hood and above window. Nothing more is needed. Very pretty selection

I would let that beautiful tile stand alone. It is stunning & adding to it would only detract from it.

thank you all for keeping me in check. ;) It is so hard for me to say no to more shiny and sparkly.

@rebunky, there are uppers, just not there. But there are no painted walls. It is either uppers with backsplash underneath or backsplash to the ceiling. I opted for no uppers near the cooktop though, because with a 42" hood vent, that would make them really small, and I don't really like things to look crowded.

@eam44 I thought of that too, but I find stainless so industrial looking. I feel like it would bug me. I found this though http://www.mosaicsource.ca/home/253-lantern.html but that would not make less grout. Although it could be dark grout.

Ok gotcha. That's is going to look AAAAAWESOME! I really do feel like the MOP with the iridescence colors and especially in the hex shape, is a big wow all by itself. Oooooo this one is going to be so pretty.

thank you :) It feels like it is taking forever, and I have the kitchen reno blues. If that is such a thing, lol. I have not had running water in there, or counters, for 6 weeks. But the counters go in tuesday, so it should be somewhat functional within the next 2 weeks, and I cannot wait to use real dishes and wash them. In a sink. LOL

Oh, I love a lantern shape, but I wouldn't do that in conjunction with the rest. You could consider diamond stainless (quilt) instead of just a sheet of brushed stainless.

I think that is not the look I want. I will probably just seal the mop and grout every six months.

@jenncent- I am in LOVE with the hex MOP! Go for it! It's going to be gorgeous. Would you mind sharing where you found them? Thanks in advance ;)

hi, thanks! I actually ordered some from 3 places, to check out the varying qualities out there. These are the ones I choose http://www.mosaicsource.ca/best-sellers/248-whistling-oyster.html They had the most lustre, but more variation in colour than the tile bar. Not a ton more variation, but lots more lustre, which made it worth it for me. I also ordered from the tile outlet (?) and they were pretty too, but the ones I picked were the shiniest to my eyes.
