Transitional flooring

I am in the midst of construction, getting into the interior decor phase of things. We are building an en-suite for my parents that is open to our living space for cost reasons, however we are building their "apartment" to allow them (and us) independence, so they have a partial kitchen, bath, bedroom with walk-in closet, etc.

My dilemma is this. I've designed our kitchen as a classic "white kitchen". White cupboards, white frosted counter top on the island with a contrasting slate countertop on the back kitchen counter, and my intent is to tile the backsplash with a white textured tile, stainless handles, etc.

My parents have designed their kitchen with slate gray cabinets, a light, slightly beige tinged counter top with bronze hardware.

What would you recommend for a wood floor colour that would compliment both colour palates?

Also, both of us prefer light, neutral coloured paint (grays, greens. Etc.). What would your recommendation be for a wall colour to compliment the slate gray cabinets? What about tile for backsplash?

Would very much appreciate the advice!
