If you can find one in a thrift store or at a garage sale, get an older Rival brand crock pot. They are very well built. We have 2 that are 34 years old and don't show any signs of conking out. Of the new slow cookers I would recommend a Cuisinart brand. We have the SS digital one. With a removable inner pot. It runs a bit hot. But does a nice job of cooking, simmering ,etc.
