I think that it is okay to mix some finishes. The trick is 1) to not have too many in one room and 2) don't mix dated faucet fixtures with new stuff. And even those are not hard and fast rules, as a good designer can always find a way to blend items that would not otherwise go together.

I myself have oil rubbed bronze hardware on all doors and most of my faucet and lighting fixtures, but I still used satin finished chrome in a few bathrooms for the faucets. I think it looks good, and it allowed me to have some bathrooms look more modern and spa like. While, the rest of my house has french and traditional elements.

Good examples of oil rubbed mixed with other chromes and satins.
