While I am z:4 I am Midwest and these plants will grow well in z:5 also.

Perhaps rouge will respond with some interesting plants that are z:5 such as persicaria 'Golden Arrows'.

Daphne × transatlantica 'Summer Ice' - semi-evergreen, blooms from April until October here

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Twist and Shout' - One of the few H. macrophylla that blooms consistently for me. Happiest in part shade unlike H. paniculata which prefers more sun this far north.

Veronica 'Georgia Blue' Grows well in my garden in all light conditions from full shade (loose growth habit) to full sun (tighter mounds) Stunning blue spring flower, and low, tidy foliage that over time weaves around larger plants but doesn't overwhelm any of its neighbors.

Kalmia latifolia (mountain laurel) any cultivar that appeals to you. a broadleafed evergreen for shade with stunning spring flowers

I grow all of these in varying degrees of shade, though I also grow V. 'Georgia Blue' in almost full sun. Any of them will be happy with light shade, but my soil is acid, fine sandy loam, so you will need to check if they will like your less acidic soil.

Red bee balm, purple columbine, pansies, sweet woodruff, Alberta Spruce (on the corners with a bit more sun) and plan to add some bleeding heart :)

I'm in zone 4, eastern Washington, 5 miles from Idaho. We have cold, windy winters and these have all done beautifully, on the east side of the house.
