A Blank Slate - Please Help

I have posted on here before, but did not receive a lot of feedback. Our family moved into our home almost two years ago and we have made little progress with the living room decor. I really don't know what to do. We want it to be stylish, functional, and comfortable all at the same time (something out of Southern Living). :) The couch, love seat, and rug are new additions to the living since moving in. We also are in the process of having a wing back chair re-covered in the fabric shown in the last picture. It was my intent to try and incorporate the blues in some accent pieces so we don't drown in a sea of green and browns. I took pictures from every angle to provide a general feel of the room. The room dimension are 16 x 22.5. I am a very visual person so any "picture ideas" that you can provide would be great.

We are looking for wall art/pieces, tables (end tables and coffee table), lamps, and other accessories to incorporate into this space. Also, do we need to rearrange anything? Thanks for any help that you can provide! The C Family!

Hang a mirror over the table by dining room opening and some art over console. Since the sofas recline I am not sure a coffee table or ottoman will work.

Actually it is centered to the ceiling not the wall. I mean center it on the wall. Half way from door opening to wall where plant is setting. If you move the loveseat closer to sofa, then the console will be lined up better behind it.

    For between sofas

Since your furniture reclines and there will be no coffee table I suggest you put end table where tiny rocker is to handle drinks etc and another lamp.

I would relocate the small table by front door, With a table and lamp between sofas you will not need it. I think it might fit behind the loveseat for some interest when entering.

Oops, can't do that loveseat reclines. Bad me.

    Picture for over console

    Above narrow table.

The room really needs a coffee table, but would probably have to be moved when reclining, but when using room for just visiting would be so nice to have one. What do you think?

place the rug in the opposite direction the place the largest sofa parallel to the tv wall. float it in the center of the room with legs on the rug. place one of your console tables behind it and move family phoyos from under the to console behind the sofa. put loveseat where the sofa was. add a contrasting color to drapes and pillows. leave a console table between 2 doorways and add a colorful picture. on the wall opposite the tv, place your third console table in the center and flank it with a two chairs. add a picture above it and games or etc on top for an additional sitting area. add a coffee table with decor. hope that helps

I agree about the coffee table. I have been looking, but I feel like we need something pretty large due to the size of the room. Also, I agree about the small table by the door. It would be our hope to find some end tables that could go between the couch and love seat and maybe at the other end to replace the rocker (depends on space). Like the tables you posted, where are they from?
Can you use the console elsewhere, and get one that is lower and longer? The tv needs to be lower for comfortable viewing when sitting, and reclining. How long is the wall? I would suggest getting the longest console that fits, mounting the TV over the the console off center, and close to the console, and using the other space for a painting, smaller than the TV, baskets, pottery or pictures on the console below the painting.

Console was custom built and installed and believe it or not the TV is at a comfortable viewing placement. We don't plan on moving either, but thank you for those comments.
Both are of contemporary rooms, but it's the use of a longer console, with the TV off center, that I wanted to show.

The mirror and picture are from Pier 1 and the tables from overstock.com. Not expensive and they also have some good sized coffee tables you might want to look at. A square one would work.

Look for something to add a pop of red/burgundy/orange.
Global squares - abstract wall art from Pier1 - has greens, teal, brown, etc, and a couple swipes of orange red.

As suggested, we changed the furniture around. Any more thoughts?

Your room looks much better like this with the love seat and sofa switched. The feet of the sofa need to be on the rug, the same as the love seat. Either move the sofa (which I would suggest) or move the rug if you don't want the sofa closer to the TV. Don't worry if the rug is not centered on the windows or love seat. It's more important, especially in such a large room, to get a cosy-feeling seating area.

Where are you planning to put the wing chair? Do you have another chair that you can put in the room to give us a visual? I like the blue in the wing chair fabric. I'd choose good size (at least 20 inches square) feather filled pillows, covered in a solid blue soft touchable fabric (velvet?) for a comfortable vibe.

Or add the blue in other places too, besides wall art. Maybe one end table could be blue-painted, in a distressed finish. Or a big pale blue ottoman instead of a coffee table, with a tray on it for beverages.

Do you have a green thumb? A large plant would look good where the little rocker is now.

The dining room chair is where we plan on placing the wing chair once it is recovered. I like the idea of a blue end table and had planned on some blue accent pillows. Just a matter of finding them! :)

Much better. Wondering why you are keeping so much distance between the sofa and loveseat, is it because they recline and need room for the footrests? Also when you get chair I would put it facing tv closer to end of sofa on the right.

Would this color work for side table?

Yes, I think that color could possibly work. To answer your other question, we need room for the foot rest. I hope to find a end table to put between the couch and love seat, just know it will need to be larger.
Try something on the wall above the loveseat
  • 11 years ago

Maybe a couple of small ones like this to bring out when not using recliners.

Lovely room, not furniture related but I suggest shortening the drapery rods by moving the finials closer to the rod bracket. Love the entertainment piece, but would remove the picture frames. I think a candlestick type lamp would look very nice on the left side of the table by the door, especially when lit at night. The sofa table looks a bit small for the wall it is on, I would trying moving the buffet piece to that wall and use the sofa table in another area of your home. I would love to see your sofa and love seat form a tight L shape and share a large open square end table, although I understand only one piece could be in the reclining position at a time on the end of the sofa or love seat with that configuration. I feel your room calls for substantial pieces of furniture along with artwork and plants/tree.

Colorful art work with mirrors. Change rug to more color one and put a small colorful occasional chair. Peir one has all of thes good prices.

Sorry, the rug is brand new and not going anywhere anytime soon. Thanks for your comments.

This is such a nice room. The problem is a matter of scale. You could use much larger and weightier furniture pieces. Everything seems to be floating by themselves with no relationship to one another. Lots of empty wall space. I would think of looking for larger vertical pieces to warm up this space. Pull the sofa away from the wall and get good size end tables and tall hefty lamps. Maybe a nice sofa table for the back of the floating sofa if it's possible. I would have done a very large , tall TV cabinet with side bookshelves to take up that huge wall and give you that Southern Living look.

The original poster mentioned that the TV cabinet is new and custom, so she won't be changing that. I think it's fine. What I've seen on Houzz is people taking apart those big cabinets and using the parts. The room just needs to be finished with what she asked about in her first post.

Hope the OP comes back and shows us how she's progressing. Nice room.

We bought some new arts pieces and are in the process of hanging them. We are also in the process of trying to find end tables and a coffee table.
I'm sorry, I guess I missed the part were the OP said the tv cabinet was custom made. Perhaps if they added a chair rail and painted the bottom half a shade or two darker it might add the coziness this room needs. Artwork , lamps and I still feel a larger vertical piece of furniture somewhere in the room to break up the " everything at eye level look" would help.
By the way, I like you r drapes but you need to bring them out to the end of your rods. The last tab can go on the other side of the bracket so we don't see them. They really should just skim the side of your windows, not overlap them as you have shades for light control. This will give your windows a wider and grander presence .

I bought this last night and we are trying to decide where to hang it. We think it will work well in the room.

Nice piece. I like that it has the blue-green color. I like it better hung horizontally.

I was thinking of doing something like this on the wall where the sofa table is. That way I could clear the pictures off the entertainment center. The new metal art piece could be hung over the buffet. Any thoughts?

Your room is lovely. The wing chair will be a nice addition. A frame collage is a wonderful idea over your sofa table. What do you think of the idea of a putting a beautiful tall plant in the corner that currently has the small rocker in it? Something in a taller container with an uplight behind it would bring some life and color to that corner.

We represent a brilliant and very popular artist Maurice Sapiro. I think one of these pieces would look beautiful in the room.

My husband hung the new piece today! Thanks for all the input. I am still looking for accent pieces and tables. I will post more pictures as we make improvements.

The room is getting there nicely.

Might have been suggested before but find a pair of tall table lamps or short fat table lamps to go on either side of wall hangiing. You are drowning in a sea of brown.

Here is a suggestion for the ottoman. Weighty enough to center the room and mobile enough for extra seating.

We are still in search of an ottoman/coffee table and end tables. I found a tall lamp that I like, just waiting for it to go on sale. I'm also looking for some tall plants to put in to accent.
