Perhaps you are simply looking for personal shopper and not a designer. Of course designers should always take in the personal taste of the client, but if you don't allow the designer create a vision and implement it, you will never have a project that exceeds your own personal limits.

Personal recommendations are often the best resource for finding a designer, just the same for doctors and attorneys.

I'm in the process of starting an interior design business and definitely understand that there are clients who prefer that collaborative approach. I would suggest interviewing a few, letting them know how you envision working together, and see if they are open to that.

Call a few designers and interview them over the phone. Be very clear as to how you want to work. Be detailed in your explanation so there is no misunderstanding and then hire one.
