That sort of production from potted plants during this hotter and drier than normal summer should be considered a good job well done.

Me too, I think you did a good job with those potted plants.

My experience, with early tomatoes – including Early Girl –
was not very good.

I am further down South in State of WA, Seattle area.

I had overall a pretty good even better than expected season.

I mostly planted in raised beds but also a few (Dwarfs) in pots. Some of my plants have half a dozen or so green mature tomatoes right now that are ripening slowly.I have been harvesting since mid July.

I had two plants in particular ( Willamette and Siletz both developed by OSU for PNW) that are doing very well. I think they are better than Early Girl. I grew EG in 2012 and was not impressed with it.

About Container Growing:

I think 3 - 5 gallon of soil volume is almost bear minimum for a plant like EG. I have used 4 - 5 gallon for my dwarfs. That was ok. For full size plant I would recommend about 10 gallon (+/- 2). Smaller pots tend to miniaturize the plant, as it restricts root growth.
