Plant suggestions for stone walkway

We have a new stone walkway that was just constructed this summer and we'd like to plant something in the cracks between the rocks. The gaps between the rocks are relatively tight, ranging from 0" to 1", but up3" in a few spots. Here's a picture:

We'd like something that's very low growing (not too mounding) and, ideally, that won't take over the entire walkway. The front of the house has a southerly exposure so it receives direct sun most of the day. We're in zone 5.

Any suggestions?

Are the rocks placed directly on topsoil? If so, that makes it extremely difficult to keep weeded. I think in the long term, Roundup will be your best friend after trying all the suggestions that might be offered. That's my experience anyway.

Some people plant thyme between pavers. It can spread fairly aggressively, though. In Colorado, people sometimes plant Turkish veronica (V. liwanensis) between pavers. You may get too much rainfall in southern Maine for it to survive, though. I like Veronica prostrata. It's evergreen and relatively flat except when in bloom, when it gets a couple of inches tall. But it doesn't spread as quickly as thyme and is more tolerant of moisture than Turkish veronica is.
