Is it possible to use an Island Range Hood on the wall instead?

We're renovating the kitchen and found a steal for an island range hood on Craigslist. Our stove will be against the wall. We realized that it was an island hood after negotiating on the price. Will using an island hood against the wall work? Or will it look goofy? Are there any pictures of this out there?

Decent wall mount hoods are 24" deep - not 18" deep. 18-inch deep hoods are usually the cheap builder-grade hoods or expensive over-the-range MW hoods - neither of which are very effective.

The difference b/w an island and a wall mount, though is where the "chimney" is located.

On a wall mount, the chimney is on the back of the hood.

On an island hood, the chimney is up the middle.

I don't see why you can't use an island hood on the perimeter (against the wall). Instead of the chimney going up against the wall, the chimney will have room behind it and go up to the ceiling.

I would talk to your contractor about installing it - it may cost more to install, depending on your space and the scope of the other work (e.g,. is the ceiling already open?)

Would guess an island hood will push the venting too far away from the wall to be effective, not to mention you would hit your head on it???

It's counter-depth in terms of size, so I dont think it would jut out past the stove. Here are the dimensions for the hood:

Dimensions:
- Chimney Height Minimum: 24-5/8"
- Chimney Maximum Height: 34-3/4"
- Canopy Height: 10-1/4"
- Overall Width: 35-3/8"
- Overall Depth: 23-5/8" <--

It looks like the depth is normal, but I would call kitchen aid customer service and see what they say.

A wall mount hood is more like 18" deep... they do not come all the way forward to the edge of the counter... ouch
I don't think it would look bad but?!?

Buehl is much, much more qualified to answer than I. So we have both learned, love Houzz and it's experts! Am glad you are now getting a response from those that know!

I came back as last evening I was reading a post here about someone wanting to put a hood in front of their window. Though not exactly the same situation, would call for the same thinking... window=wall... guessing your situation easier to resolve.

Also you could bump out the stove slightly to give you more space if that is of concern. It looks like that was done in this picture too.
