Would you keep this Meyer Lemon Tree?

Hello everyone,

I just bought a $9 Meyer Lemon tree from my local Home Depot in Houston. It was the last one on the discount rack (just look at it!). I'm beginning to wonder if it is worth keeping. Is the fact there are 3 trunks coming from the soil problematic? Isn't there supposed to be a graft union somewhere on most citrus? I don't see one, so could it be buried? Would you keep this little guy?

The mottling on the lower leaves is a bit concerning...

I didn't know they were rooted cuttings citrange2. Thank you!

Carolb, could you be more specific as to why what you see is concerning?

I think she means that the leaves have yellowing. Like they are mottled which could mean a number of things. Most likely the soil is just bad and they need something more fast draining. Also, definitely want to take the advice citrange2 just gave you! Yah for more than one tree!

my rescue Meyer looked like your tree 16 months ago.

But you will have 3 to this one.
It also has a lemon the size of a medium grapefruit.

Never, ever start over if it's not dead. Or at least that's my motto. Why start over by buying a new one when you can fix it and buy something different?

R, thanks. I too assume the soil isn't the best, so I will try to separate the trunks and re-pot.

Steve, that is such a green, lush looking Meyer. I hope I can get these scraggly twigs to put on some similar growth. From what I've read here, I shouldn't fertilize this plant now with cold weather on the way in a month or so. So, I'll plan on starting in the Spring I suppose.

Pip, I don't consider this starting over since I just bought it today. I haven't invested any time or resources toward its care, so I am not attached to it. I just don't want to buy a "lemon" tree. I'll show myself out... :)

The title kinda hinted toward it.

Do you want 3 trees or just 1?

I wanted 1 tree but got 3. I just finished separating them and potted them into their own pots. It was a challenge getting the roots separated and I lost some of the root mass in the process. Hopefully, they will recover.

Keep them in shade for a couple of days. It is easier to grow 3 Meyer lemon tree in 10 gallon 33.3 pound containers than 1 Meyer lemon tree in a 30 gallon 100 pound container, if moving them is ever needed

I was going to suggest cutting the other two out to save the keepers roots. Oh well you should be fine anyway just maybe a little more shock then the other way.

Thanks to you both. Good or bad news, I'll update with pics in a few months.

$9 seems expensive for that condition. HD should have great condition improved meyers for <$13. But they seem to be much more stingy about multiple rooted cuttings now; I didn't care as I wanted to train into tree form and single was fine.

I had something just like you had with three in them. 2 survived the transplant; 3rd is suffering bad from shock but still looks alive.
