It was my Mom's birthday yesterday and making this rose public here is a gift for her, and Beth (Dallas) my mom is quite a dainty lady but very strong-willed. This rose is turning out to be just like her. My folks live in South Africa and came to visit in August so they were able to see the roses named after them. I have another for my Dad - 'Adorable Albert' (pic to follow).

Your Terracotta bud picture there (at HMF) was the most beautiful deep color. Hard to believe a rose can be that color. Thank you for posting these. Of course Valencia is a star.

Since you have successfully hybridized roses - can you tell me how you do the pollen part? I can't seem to get the anthers to spurtz out the pollen. I've tried and tried. Maybe I'm picking them too early, maybe too late?? Do you have any ideas on this?

Can't believe it is already that cold over there! But the roses are holding up very well. The colors are so intense! Love all of them but your Loving Lorna rose steals the show. What a great cross! Do you know how many petals does it have? I just love its slightly cupped center and pink picotee edge.

Thanks Carol, my rose 'Loving Lorna' is a CompassionXArthur Bell cross and both roses have Peace in their lineage. Arthur Bell is a 3rd and Compassion a 2nd generation descendant of Peace so I think it's not surprising that there is a similarity.
Regarding pollen collection: The experts say that timing does play a role. Here is a link that was very helpful to me when I start hybridizing http://www.marinrose.org/hybridizing.html

Karen, the first bloom on 'Loving Lorna' had 32 petals. This one looks a little fuller - will count again when I dead-head.

So would it hamper pollination spritzing to have the anthers in tin containers? That's what I've been doing.

Beautiful roses and at 39 degrees. Loving Lorna is my favorite.

Carol, don't see why tin should make a difference just so long as you leave the containers open so that the pollen can dry.

Kentucky - thanks! The 39 is only the morning temp. days are still around 56.
Must say my Mom and Dad are both chuffed with all the comments about their roses. They often read my posts.

Karen, just dead-headed a Loving Lorna bloom - it had 42 petals! It hadn't opened completely and was already dropping petals - must be the cooler temperatures! Still smells like a dream!

Generally, I find it difficult to explain scent. I just went and had a wiff. Loving Lorna smells similar to Compassion, just a bit stronger. Not overpoweringly sweet but you notice it when you walk past.
Unfortunately, my folks live in South Africa and we live in Switzerland so my Mom will never be able to grow Loving Lorna herself - just admire my photos. I have taken cuttings though, 6 in total, all rooted and are doing very well:)

Thanks Ann. First year and it has been in a pot (too small) the whole season so it hasn't done that well. I have just planted it in the garden so it will probably do better next season.
