OLIO

No thanks to Houzz but big thanks to Jon for solving my "I can't post pics any more" problem. This is a test, this is only a test, if this were a real hosta emergency, I would be typing this in caps. An olio of recent photos.....a couple using my camera's cool "watercolour" feature:

MARILYN MONROE flowers

ABBA DABBA DO (in its 3rd year) looking really, really good for end of September:

ENGLISH SUNRISE was more than half dead last year. I babied it, moved it into my special Hosta Hospital section of the garden in the middle of 2014, transplanted it here just a few weeks ago. A late Sept photo shows her looking pretty happy now. I hope for even better next year.

My EMPRESS WU has wowed me this year. I'm giving her Hosta of the Year honours (an arbitrary award in my own garden.) She was planted in 2012 and has grown by leaps and bounds; is 6 feet across now and the largest leaf measures 15" wide by 21" long. It's October, and she is still looking this good.

I apologized (yes, out loud) to my SAGAE in late August because earlier in the year I had dissed her for giving me only ONE EYE. After 3 years in the ground I expected more of her. But then. THIS is what one eye produced this season. C'mon 2016!

CAPTAIN KIRK's colouring looked really pretty against the yellowing leaves of a fading Bleeding Heart in August:

There's nothing like a close up to get you noticed. This is GOLD STANDARD.

My newest acquisition this year - SHARP DRESSED MAN. I've wanted one of those for a while (but he insists wearing jeans is fine...)

A little corner of the front garden:

Around the bend from that same corner:

Thanks for taking the time to view.

So lovely! Hostanista, what kind of paint do you use on your rocks?

It's a paint pen. Not ink, but actual paint. The ink Sharpies fade too quickly. I found these paint pens at Michael's Craft Store (Canada) but I would assume you have them in the U.S. too. Probably available at any craft store, really. I've had some for 3 years now and the writing is still clearly visible. If the rock is in a lot of sun, the letters may need a bit of touching up after a couple of seasons.

Gorgeous plants/photos! What are the ground covers you use in your beds (other than hosta)? I was looking at the group shot with the birdbath -- is it pachysandra? and a purple one in front - ajuga or heuchera?

Thanks Windymess, there's a mix of ground covers that creep into the hosta beds, some with no help from me. In the front yard there is a winding bed of periwinkle (purple flowers), ivy (I hate it), and pachysandra (good eye!). I try to rip out the ivy little by little so the periwinkle and pachysandra can eventually take over. Not sure which purple one in front you mean (ajuga or heuchera) but I do have both growing alongside my hostas. The heuchera are scattered here and there, I don't have too many. But the ajuga runs rampant especially in my back yard. Nothing will stop this stuff, but luckily, I like it and the purple upright flowers look very pretty with the hostas. Here is some surrounding a small London Fog.

Thanks for the info, and the pics (with labels on the hosta - that helps me so much, as I'm trying to learn!). I can understand about the ivy - its definitely a garden thug. I also have some periwinkle and ajuga - mine is Black Scallop. I'm glad to hear you like it, I've been hoping I won't regret planting some. I had heard from another gardener around here that Black Scallop was pretty well behaved in her yard, so I planted some. I'd like to reduce the amount of mulch I have buy, eventually. I love pachysandra, and we had some when we lived in Virginia, years ago. But I can't grow it here. My soil is pretty alkaline, and when I've tried it, it just turns its toes up.
