Architect or custom builder?

I'm going to build what I plan to me my final home in the next five years. I live in the southeastern region of the US. Currently, I'm in the research and saving stage. I have a rough draft for a floor plan that I've fallen in love with, but it's self designed and might need some work done to it. Currently, I do not have a plot of land to build on, so finding that will also be a part of the process.

I've heard pros and cons for both architects and custom builders alike:

-- architects are artists that typically work on commercial properties and aren't budget conscience; custom builders are contractors that cut corners to make the most profit and aren't concerned with aesthetics

-- some architects do focus their work on residential buildings and have great design ideas that will add a unique look to your house; custom home builders have a team of contractors that sometimes include kitchen designers and architects.

My question is, which one should I look into hiring for my situation?
