Brown murky pond

Hi all

I have a small pond (about 60 gals). All was well till l added a Louisiana Iris plant bought from a nursery. First thing we noticed were some snails. Got rid of those prompltly, then came what looked like disturbed red/brown sediment. Improvised a filter which made no difference. Tried replacing half the water. The clarity improved immediately, but the murkiness returned after a few hours. Hence deduced that is waterborne algae of some kind. Algicide made no difference (even concentrated In a test tube) bleach added to another test tube cleared the brown within 24 hours. Any suggestions?

I don't think that's algae - I think your murkiness is really suspended material in the water, perhaps the soil from your plant? Do you have something that is agitating the water? A bubbler or fountain? If you scoop a sample and leave it, will the brown material settle out?

The filter may not have helped if the sediment is too fine. Many filters are not really designed to trap small particles. You could try filtering the water through some quilt batting to see if you can trap it. Good luck!

Have you reposted the plant?.... try removing the soil from the existing plant and repotting it in a proper pond soil medium. How are You filtering or aerating the water? Tell us how you get on.
