Help with range hood and cabinets

This first picture shows the original design. 42" hood over our 36" cooktop, with tile all around it (we don't plan to have any painted wall in the kitchen, only tile).

This is the current design.

The window was obviously placed a bit different from where the designer originally had it. Now she has the range hood at 36" over our 36" cooktop, which we don't particularly like. We'd prefer to see it at 42", which would then make the uppers on either side of the cooktop 27" instead of 30". I'm thinking this is OK since all our uppers on the sink wall have 14" wide doors, they would all match pretty well.

So I guess my question is if we should push for a 42" hood? Our kitchen is about 16x18 and we have a huge 9x6 island. I feel like the current hood would look weak. I also don't love how it's squared off now, but I could live with it.

Another option I had thought of was just having one, maybe 15-16" cabinet, on either side of the range and making the hood even larger. We have plenty of storage space in the kitchen so I'm not worried about losing a few inches of upper cabinet space. But I'm not sure how symmetrical that would look.

Regarding lower cabs to the left of the cooktop - we were originally going to have an 8.5" cabinet to house a griddle and towel bar but now that the cab has increased to 20" that seems pretty inefficient so I was thinking of just having another bank of 3 drawers instead. Good idea?

Take off the cabinets next to the hood entirely. They crowd it visually. You do want the wider hood. The space could handle a MUCH wider hood.

Are your cabinets fully custom, or are all of the sizes you mentioned above available in the cabinet line you've chosen?

Having
a hood 6" wider than the cook top is not only a design choice, but
preferable from a functional standpoint--a wider hood has a larger
capture area for heat, odors, grease, and steam (HOGS). I like your idea
for the 42" hood, and 27" uppers.

Also I'd take the extra drawer base over a 20" door
cabinet.

Thank you for your responses! Our cabinets are fully custom. I have thought about taking out the uppers entirely, I feel like it is a lot of cabinetry with our fridge & freezer on the same wall.

Why did the KD switch from the curved hood to the squared off one? That really is something that is your choice and one I wouldn't live with. The curved one gives your cabinets breathing space.

And I agree, I would take the extra drawer stack over a 20" door cabinet as well.

I have 15" cupboards on either side of my hood and I do like them.

We were cross-posting and so just read your response - If you don't need the storage space then sure take the uppers off, expand the hood but I would still make it curved.

If you take them off, do you have a plan for storing oils, vinegars, spices, etc?

I love storing all my spices/seasonings in drawers. So much easier to find and grab. My favorite insert for this, after trying several, are the very inexpensive Ikea ones.

Yes to the wider hood(whether squared or curved), Yes to the stack of drawers. Not too sure about oil storage next to your range...think you want a cool dark place for oils. Next to the range may get too warm.

Since the KD has the option to move the window over, can you have two windows and center the hood between them? You could then have an upper cabinet in the left corner.

OK, then put the drawer one drawer over. The point is that there are ways to store these items without having uppers nearby. :)

ETA: Love MG's window placement idea.

No idea why she changed the style of the hood, but now she is going back to curved after I sent her about 5 emails today :)

The windows are placed, so I don't have the option of having the hood between 2 windows although that does look nice!

Funkycamper thank you for the visual! I do have an email to the KD regarding taking the cabinets out completely, or just one smaller cabinet so we will see where we end up. Hoping to get this all decided and signed off by Tuesday!

If the windows are placed and can't be moved, enlarged, whatever, then in the drawing I did for you, I do think the window nicely balances the fridge so I think it works visually.
