Interior rough resawn fir beams.

Our beams have developed dusty white film on them. When brushed, a powder like substance falls to the floor. A painter came in and spot treated
One beam with bleach water. We were told this is not mildew. Has anyone run across this problem? We have live in our home 23 yrs. and live in Santa Cruz, Calif.
