Hi there, you can definitely prune it further down to encourage branching further down. Multiple nodes (where leaves do or did emerge and where new shoots would come out too) is best, but even with a couple you should be good. If that was mine and I wanted a bushy tree-ish look, I'd definitely prune it a bit lower. I'd suggest doing it NOW or doing it in spring. If you wait much longer the new growth will be very young and tender and susceptible to frost/freeze damage. Good luck and keep us posted!

I really appreciate your reply grant_in_arizona!! I took your advice and pruned further down. What do you think? If I should prune even further, is it okay to cut at nodes where leaves are not present?

I like what you did. That's a VERY stern haircut, and shouldn't need to be repeated, but I like it and think you'll have great results. As each new shoot gets 2 or three SETS of leaves, I'd pinch out the tip to encourage more, low branching. Then I'd do it AGAIN when those branches have a set or two of leaves, and so forth. I typically stop in early summer just so i can enjoy the blooms, hah. Good luck and do keep us posted!

Good point, FN. I would slowly ease the plant off of the nursery stake too, by slowly making the ties more and more loose so the tree starts to sway more and more over several months, then eventually it can have nothing, or almost nothing.
