Actually there are a number of important commercial crops, as well as quite a few specialty flowers and crops which have been developed through radiation-induced mutations. The resulting plants have NO residual radiation; all that remains are the beneficial mutations. In fact, some of the organic foods currently being produced were developed in this manner. If you are growing an apple or pear with certain disease resistances, there is some chance that radiation-induced mutations helped in the development cycle. One of the sunflowers used for oil production has induced mutations in its heritage.

What the radiation is doing is providing a greater selection of mutations to evaluate for beneficial properties. Growers, including those with an organic focus, can then choose which ones are important to them. As lazy gardens notes above, a significant benefit is that there is no testing or approvals needed to introduce these improved varieties. The market can then decide if they are of value.
