Any back splash suggestions?

I really hardly know where to start for back splash for my new kitchen, don't want to detract from floor or counter, yet i don't really want to invest the money into a totally plain white subway tile either just for the functionality of tile... I got the painter to paint it so it would be usable until I made a decision
