Hi there! Ugh, seems pretty unfair, but you have to get the job done. From the sound of it, the patch that has been scratched has to be removed. It's the same with having a pet scratching your carpet. Since heels are sharp, I don't think your tools will be handy. For now, try and soak the affected area and surrounding areas, wash it thoroughly, let it dry and then vacuum. This should make the 'stain' less noticeable. But try and talk to them and explain that the only way the problem will disappear, is by removing the carpet. I'm sorry for what had happened...

Thanks for your swift reply. I've just had an email through from my lecturer that has stated that rubbing his foot on it has caused it to fade, though it is still quite visible.

Does this mean it's got more of a chance of being amended? if not and I'm unable to remove it, I think I'll just drag the hoover over it and make the shape unrecognizable; this should work as a last resort right?

Do I understand that the carpet is matted down with the "artwork?" If so, you might be able to fluff the nap with a steam iron and a brush of some type. Don't put the iron on the carpet, just use the steam and the brush.
