On your 1936 home you will want traditional style windows. These are usually double hung style and casements.
The shape of the windows should be taller with a narrower width.

You can look at photos of similar houses on houzz.com to get a feeling for what you like.

There are some very nice products available that give you a traditional look with modern materials. Aluminum clad, Fiberglas, even vinyl can look good and needs little maintenance. Good brands include Pella, Anderson, Marvin, Milgard and more.

You might ask the local window distributors for some of the companies I mentioned ( or others) if they can do a computer rendering for you showing the options.
