I was going to quit my job when I heard the news. Good thing I didn't.

Gee, the world has ended several time in my lifetime--and I see the Event more as a source of "stress relief," (a/k/a HUMOR) than I do anything else! The first End of the World I actually remember was in 1959 when a sect of the Seventh Day Adventists KNEW it was going to end! I, and all my classmates, sat in our high school English class watching the clock--and NOT listening to the teacher! The time for The End came and went--and we, some of us at least, went back to listening to the teacher!

Here's a site with info about The End of the World from AD 114 to 2060! Since this site goes PAST 2015, I guess there's still hope!!!

I like what you said Barb " I think gardeners have a edge in staving off the gloom by growing plants, creating and nurturing requires hope!"

There is no activity that embodies the old chestnut that "hope springs eternal" than gardening. After all, I make no secret about my frustration year after year, but, for some reason I keep doing it (what's that about insanity?).

The closeness to nature helps but there is a balance in human nature, a desire for certitude.

Farmers have to act on faith, hope and experience. Then, they have 6 winter months to contemplate their sins. No one's livelihood is so closely aligned to the uncertainties of nature. And yet, all that uncertainty must generate a great balancing desire for figuring it out, gaining closure - on most any subject. Don't cotton to much ambiguity ... Can't get much more definitive than the end of the world!

Of course, we don't have a nation of farm majorities anymore but that might be why we are just a little more uncertain about these end-of-world declarations. In one of those RMG posts Skybird linked to, I admitted being raised in a movement begun after "the Great Disappointment." People on farms amounted to 64% of the U.S. population in the 1840's. Some of them burned their homes and barns, so as to be ready for the End!
