I noticed a sign for that brand at the Home Depot near me, but they were sold out of it.

I was just curious, because I know some local farms sell it dirt cheap, if anyone had a local farm they use. Craig's List has a bunch of listings for it, but I would prefer not to go that route.

Honestly it is basically just compost, fairly low in nutrients -- you can make it yourself.

Yeah but doesn't the animal manure have a better source of bacteria? Plus, I don't think my compost pile is big enough to amend all of my beds.

I'll see about getting the Black Kow stuff. I ended up just getting a few bags of the Bovine brand this year. I just thought "what's better than farm fresh?!" :-)

If you can find a reputable local source that is probably best, regardless. My concern is always persistent herbicides: http://smallfarms.oregonstate.edu/sfn/f09Herbicide . You definitely don't want "farm fresh", you want thoroughly composted :)

That's a good point. Well unless I come in contact with someone who has a source they've used repeatedly, with success, then I won't get any from a farm.

Haha! Yeah not too fresh, I don't want to smell the freshness lol.

With CL I learned you get what you pay for. 1st load I got was great, 2nd time I tried someone much cheaper. 2nd time wasn't screened looked like they just loaded up stall cleanings.
