What kind of advice are you looking for?

It's a beautiful Fireplace

If you are put off by the wood - it is reminiscent of the times when woodwork around fireplaces was considered high style - before the world wars slowly decreased the amount of materials and craftsmanship in homes. The 90's brought this back in a more modern form - people were tired of the skimpy millwork of previous decades and were looking to the substantial woodwork of earlier eras. It was also an economic up time and builders could use more expensive millwork. Now, some HGTV shows and others put this woodwork down, which is unfortunate because it probably was more costly than the minimalist millwork of today - for example the white painted MDF boards slammed up against the walls of upscale homes that passes as baseboard.

Sorry the houzz app not only posted my post too soon but posted it 3 times so sorry! We are eventually going to totally rebuild this fireplace with either brick or stone but we will be moving into this house first of Dec and Id like some ideas on how to paint this so it looks decent for Christmas in our new home. Colors etc . Thanks so much

HI --Ok I am going to be straight up with you on this one . Please don't take this the wrong way . I don't know if you did this or the past owners did but this looks like a DIY done with scrap found leftover materials . Nothing matches and it has no style direction. Do you like this ? If you do then it needs work to change and finish it . The marble (?) flat hearth does not go with the pink marble (?) firebox surround . So one or both of those has to go. The over mantel needs to be finished with more moldings . Look for photos of formal French style fireplaces with over mantels for a guide . Doing all this I think is just going to end up looking cluttered . I think I would just take it all off and start over . Is this even your style ? Is this even a real fireplace and if it is was it put in to code and properly vented . If it is a fake , then take it out and put something classy in . Sorry, but I had to tell you the truth !

For Christmas I would paint all the wood white and the front plate can be spray painted with a high heat black paint. You can put art work up that you will use after you demo where the mirror is now or a wreath and matching garland or whatever Christmassy? things you have.

YIKES, are you keeping the detailed crown moulding and are you painting it white? If so paint this " beauty" white till you can gut it and start from scratch. I'm sure eventually alls well that ends well!

Lefty47 no we did not design this and no it's not our style at all. We are buying this house first of Dec and we need a quick fix on it for Christmas we will eventually rebuild the whole thing. It's faux painted pink "marble" real marble on the floor. It's a mess.

Until you can replace, I think if you sprayed the metal pieces black, painted lower trim white (first remove lower pieces and replace so they line up or replace with wider trim which would be even better) as well as mantle and molding at ceiling in white. Add a large mirror, and add some accessories to the mantle and it will be fine. Enjoy your new home.

Misty, just paint the whole thing white, even the marble area. Spay the surround a Matt charcoal. A large mirror as Maurreen suggested would take the focus off some of this. Is this electric? That large piece of white marble that is supposed to be a hearth, can that be removed or cut back? Do you have extra tiles anywhere to fill in?

This is a ventless gas fireplace. I don't have any extra tiles but I have seen a few posts on Pinterest showing that you can paint marble.
