Coordinating coffee table and console table....and rug?

last modified: 9 years ago

Here is our family room in progress (the media until is not centered yet):

The desk behind the sofa is temporary, we are replacing it with a console table:

If DH lets me, I might remove one chair (we will see.....):

I am leaning towards a round coffee table or leather ottoman. If I go for a coffee table, I like this one. It has a matching console table....is that a big no-no? Or would that work in the space?

If I go for an ottoman, I could still use the console table above. Or, I also think this console table is pretty cool. It might be "too much"?

Mostly I'm struggling with the concept of matching the coffee table and console table, or not doing that but avoiding an "eclectic" look.

Finally (for now), would a light faded rug look better in this space? I was considering the aktillery rug, but maybe it has too much dark pattern for my room?

Thank you!!!

Can we see photos of what is going on on the other side of the room? Is there another room the living room is open to? I def say use one chair as using two really crowds the space.

Is there a side table going in anywhere? If not I would use a coffee table for sure. If you wanted to use the one that matches your choice of coffee table I think that is fine.

Lovely space btw! Looks very cozy!

Here is the (messy) kitchen on the other side of the room:

I will probably add some smaller side tables as space permits. Maybe like the martini table at West Elm that you mentioned in one of my other posts.

The dining room is next door, behind the grey chairs:

sixkeys, how long is your room (from kitchen windows to wall behind media unit)? I am planning for a kitchen open to my living space and am having trouble visualizing. I love your choices, so far. For what it's worth, I think a coffee table would be a nice break from all of the upholstered pieces.

As soon as I saw your kitchen, a light bulb went on! It looks great and the upper cab/soffit problems worked out beautifully! Did you ever do a reveal?

k9arlene - I think I will be able to convince him. Just will take a little time. :)

murchkid - If I went with an ottoman, I would only consider leather for that very reason. Don't need anything else upholstered for sure. The length of the entire room is 33'5". I will post a floor plan in a little bit.

mayflowers - I am super impressed with your memory! I changed my screen name with the Houzz merge. I haven't done a reveal yet. I am a little shy with my simple kitchen, so I wasn't in a big hurry to show it off. I know I need to get over it and just do it.

What does everyone think about matching the console table to the coffee table? Or would it look better to find different but coordinating products? Thanks!!

I think matching is fine of you like both pieces. They're not going to be seen together in the same area.

They would be in the same room, console table goes behind the sofa (replacing the small desk there right now) and then coffee table.

i still don't see any reason why both pieces can't be part of a set, especially if you really like both of them.

Thanks! As an alternative to the matched set above, I am considering this drop leaf table as the console table:

And this ottoman, done in leather (either the large rectangular one, or the oval):

I like the drop leaf table, but unless you plan to open it up fully on some occasions, it seems like a waste to have the drop leaf feature. I also like the ottoman, but until you know your final furniture arrangement, I'd hold off on purchasing one. I'd also suggest you cut a template from brown paper or newspaper to visually see which shape works best. You have a lovely room.

The matching console table in your first set of photos looks too tall for the back of your sofa. Be sure to note measurements.

Agree the dropleaf, while pretty on its own, doesn't seem a good fit for a console table in your space. Not sure why... maybe because looking at it straight on means not fully appreciating the ironwork behind the leaf.

I usually love a fabric or leather ottoman for practicality (additional seating) but your furniture arrangement doesn't need any additional seating. I think a solid coffee table would work best.

Excellent points, thank you! I do think we would possibly use the drop leaf as a full table, but it isn't a "make or break" feature. Honestly, I would probably pick for looks first.

Lovely space and so nice to have so much comfy seating. I like all your choices (sorry I am not too helpful) but I think I actually prefer the console table that is not part of the set - with the shelf - I don't think it's "too much".

I get the feeling you are leaning towards an ottoman. If so, just add whichever sofa table you like the most and a side table in between the two sofas. Also, you could put a small table next to the chair or in between the chairs. That is where a small martini or other similar table would look great bc they are super small.

You have so many beautiful spaces! I love your home and the kitchen deserves a reveal!

I just adore your space! Those pocket doors, entertainment center, furniture & all. I like the one chair in the corner to open up the space some.

wonder what a console table made out of rustic wood like behind your tv would look like? You could go with custom wood worker to get the exact dimensions for your sofa height $ width.

aktillery - I really keep going back and forth between ottoman and coffee table. It is almost easier for me to pick ottoman because then I don't have to figure out how to get a coffee table to go with a console table. :) I promise to do a kitchen reveal!

All you have to do is find a coffee table you like and a console table you like. I am sure whatever you choose will go together or at least compliment each other, Do you want clean straight lines?

would you use a square coffee table? Also, check CL for some cool console tables and coffee tables.

I would definitely consider a square table, or two bunching tables.
