Redesign of kitchen and dining space.

Have a 1970's home that need update and kitchen help. Dining space is part of L shaped open living room area. Kitchen next to dining room with one door way. Thinking of opening the kitchen wall next to dining room and wondering about colors and design. Need basics of beginning the project.
