Need help with my kitchen remodel (cathedral ceilings)

I have a tiny, outdated kitchen in a 1973 house that I'm looking to remodel. We'd like to remove the dividing wall between the kitchen and the living and dining room to create one large open space. My dilemma is with the cathedral ceilings in the kitchen. I'm not sure what to do with the open space above the cabinets. It is currently about 6 feet high above the cabinets, and looks odd.

A lighting soffit with both up lights and down lights in it would fit the great contemporary bones of the home. You need to reestablish a lower visual height to the kitchen area to ground it and make it feel less exposed.

Adding some crown to the top of your cabinets would help a lot.
