Gaggenau Steam and Electric Oven Purchase

I am looking for advice on purchasing a brand new store model Gaggenau steam oven / electric oven combination. I believe this is an older model (maybe 2011-2012 or 2012-2013) (Wall Oven: BO 280/281-6 and Steam Oven: BS260/261-6). Is anyone aware of significant improvements that have been made to these models over the past several years such that we should invest in a newer model? We would get a full 2-year factory warranty on the older models. Thanks!!

The biggest difference that I know of is that the current model of the combi-steam oven has a "full surface grill", which is essentially a broiler behind glass. It's not as powerful as the one in the big oven, and more for people who don't want to have to buy a regular oven as well just to get a broiler. The new ones also have touch to open (you can buy an optional handle). The model that's supposed to come out in the Spring is hyped as being able to do sous vide, but that's press release stuff, and how well it does is yet to be seen. With the availability of low cost immersion circulators, I think this is probably a feature whose immediacy has passed during the time it took to develop it. OTOH, it portends well for a very accurate oven -- even moreso than the what Gaggenau has always been known for.

I have the same generation ovens (different combi-steam -- is the 260 tank?). They've been fantastic for about five years. I thought the full factory guarantee was five years? Which means you'd just get the two years that are left. Do make sure with Gaggenau that the warranty gets transferred to you--it shouldn't be hard, but is necessary, and you should line it up before you actually buy.

OTOH, given the way you've phrased the question, if you can afford new, you get all the benefits of new. Store display models have been loved by many, but they're usually the folks who can't even consider the price of new.

Many floor models come with full factory warranty, my Mieles did.

Thanks for your responses. Gaggenau changed their warranty a couple of years ago, as I understand. It is no longer the 5-year warranty effective 8/1/14...it changed to 2 years. We are not able/willing to pay the price of the brand new model, but we have also seen newer models come up that are also overstock or floor models, so trying to figure out if it is worth it to keep looking for newer models that come available for less than the full retail price. I believe the 260 is tanked, rather than plumbed, which I'd say is a downside...though I'm concerned about a plumbed system with the hard water where we live. We are doing a whole house filtration system, so hoping that alleviates some of the issue.

I pre-ordered the new Nomiku immersion circulator and I'm pretty pumped for that! Sounds like a neat new feature, but as I said, not willing/able to spend full price once that new model comes out. But maybe that means that I will be able to get the 2014/2015 model for a better price....

Filtration won't help a hard water problem, you need a water softener.

Other than the steam oven broiler and auto-open plllog mentioned, the only changes I'm aware of is the displays were changed from monochome to color.

I would definitely buy the previous generation.

I also have a discontinued Gagg steam oven on hold for our upcoming reno. I can't imagine that there would be that many differences (improvements) that could justify the $5,000 that I saved.

We got a model that you are referring to. Another difference is that the handle on the new model is flush and our model the handle protrudes. Also not worth the extra $5k an updated would have cost us, at least for us. We are happy with it, but it's a little techy for our taste (the beeping can get tiresome) and my Lacanche is still my overall favorite appliance. I'm a lover of simplicity I suppose.
