Could be fun to paint the ceiling, add a floating shelf along the back wall to rest drinks on with some art or a tv above, roman blinds and a fun rug.

If you can fit giant planters in each corner, then you could have a narrow shelf in each corner too, for setting a drink. There's no earthly reason not to have art -- get some big posters that seem fun. For sure if you hate the rug, get a new one and use its colors for inspiration!

I agree with you that the rug probably isn't the best choice for that room, but moving it might be a big task considering the weight of a pool table on it. If I were you, I would start by finding some cute masculine art to put on the wall. There are lots of framed prints that show men playing poker or billiards, etc. A series of related prints might be nice. Just Google "art for pool rooms". Once you find the art, you can then decide what the rug should be based on the colors in the chosen pictures. A couple of small scale bar chairs with places to put a drink might be nice tucked in the corners.

Yes you are right about moving the table. It is sooo heavy! I will look for the art, I had but haven't found something I love. Thanks for the advice

So with all your ideas, I'm getting inspired. Would it be tacky if I have my brother in law paint a mural? Like a vintage drawing? Black and white and get a fun rug and the side tables/shelf for the drinks. He painted a curious George in my sons bedroom.

It really depends on the mural and how fun you want to take the room. If you did the mural, I might skip the rug and you could still paint the ceiling or the walls.
