What are you doing to winterize your JMs?

(Sorry about murdering the names of these trees. I'm too lazy to go outside and check spelling.)

The
southern Maryland heatwave did a number on my trees' leaves this year.
My fall color is definitely affected by crinkled leaves and the
struggles with the sun. I need to figure out how to create shade in
this open yard I have.

I am putting some in the ground this year, though, in hopes that they'll do better there than in pots. Sanzanami, Maku Jaiku,
Emmit's Pumpkin, Vitifolium, Tamyuka, Brocade, probably a Japanese
Sunrise. Maybe a Tana, and a new Seriyu. I am hoping they'll withstand
the heat better in the ground, next year. Although the Sherwood Flame,
Nicholsonii, Garnet, Oshi Beni and Inaba Shidare I planted last year really, really
struggled. They're alive, but oh, so skanky because of the heat. All in all, though, I must repot perhaps 30 this
year. I knew so little about soil, and I procrastinated so much about repotting, I'm afraid some have absolutely
knotted and braided roots.

I'm also preparing for the sun and deer
next year. I've collected unused window screens and tented them over
smaller trees. I'm going to stand some up, hook the sides together, and
use them as deer barriers. I have my Deer Stop (not Deer Stopper)
ready at hand. That stuff protected every leaf I sprayed. I had to
stay vigilant about new growth because they'd chomp on it, but
everywhere I sprayed? A miracle.

My repots will go into a sheltered garden bed along the house. I don't know about winter fertilizer, but am looking into it.

What are you doing?
