In order to make the rug relate to your furniture, I'd recommend getting larger (at least 20" square) toss cushions which would pick up the white and taupe and charcoal of the rug. I can't tell if you need privacy or not, but to maximize light I'd recommend sheer linen drapes which might be white with narrow charcoal and brown stripes to bring everything together. Then I'd get some great artwork for the wall over the sofa to bring in more colours and interest. Perhaps a grouping of pictures would be best.

To be honest, I don't love the color of the couch with the colors in the rug. They're different tones. But if you're going to keep the couch, I would recommend adding some large grey/taupe throw pillows to pull the couch and rug together. Then you could add in pops of color with a few smaller throw pillows or in the art/curtains in the rest of the room.

I agree with Cynthia above, also pull the couch back off the carpet a bit, so we see more of the rug. (couches do not have to be all on the rug..it's not like we are stuck on a rug island and will drown if the back or side legs are off : ) And maybe look at Crate and Barrel-they have some nice neutral curtains, and great modern window hardware in the brushed chrome which will pick up the gray in your rug.

This Does Not Work.

Use the rug in another room, exchange it or sell it. It looks pretty bad with the brown.

That said find a rug that is not busy, as the sofa is so overwhelmingly large that it swallows up any rug that you have. The rug you have should be the main event in the area it is used in in my opinion. Like under a dining table or at the foot of a bed. The rug is great just not with the sofa.

Find a rug with brown in it, maybe a tween or strie or a stripe with many browns and taupes or go in another color completely for strong accent.

This shows flooring but a light sisal rug with binding would be nice. And some pillows in a major accent color/pattern mix.

A rug like this shows strong accent color and the connection is with the art work that has blue the same blue somewhere in each picture and the pillows done in a smaller scale pattern which creates balance in the room......obviously you do not need blue for accent color, but a persona preference works.....red, magenta, yellow, green, lime, purplw.....endless for this look.

Thank you everyone for your honest comments. I agree that the combination is pretty hideous. I was just hoping that I could somehow make it work. I did not know the couch would be so dark. I'm pretty bad at this kind of thing so I need help. Do you all suggest a lighter colored rug? I still want to have bright bold pillows so I'm thinking a lighter rug and then pops of color in the throw pillows, curtains, and art.

Blue Booby is exactly right. They CAN work together, but you'll have to go monochromatic. Nothing wrong with that; it can look very elegant.

Thank you for the ideas. I see how I could possibly make it work but I don't feel confident that I would be able to pull it off and honestly I really want color. I have a beige shag rug in another room. I can trade these and make it work. I am thinking about adding more throw pillows with color. I still like orange and blue but I will add some large 20 x 20 pillows and maybe some lighter colors. With the couch and rug being a solid color I think I can pull off a nice print curtain with some color. What do you guys think about my new plan?
