I agree that it seems odd to have the refrigerator in another room. If you wanted your family to have easy access to snacks and beverages you could do an under-counter refrigerator in the breakfast room and have the full-size refrigerator in the kitchen proper.

I haven't picked a spot for the trash/recycle bin yet, but I agree it should be there. To the right of the sink is the dishwasher.

I put the fridge over in the eating area because it is a longer wall. I thought it might also relieve some of the traffic jams and allow people to refill drinks easily. The combined area of the kitchen is really not very large. Is it still a mistake?

Sorry, but I would say yes. Main Line is better at kitchen design than I am, so he may have more suggestions for you. You would have room for a beverage center or even two refrigerator drawers over in the breakfast area (in addition to wine frig) for drinks and snacks. The main frig and the microwave need to be near the cooking activity. While the work triangle is not the only driving force in kitchen design, it is still important.

We are just remodeling our kitchen now and we have an extended cabinet over the fridge for trays and cutting boards. It also keeps me from piling stuff up there, lol. How about some high low configurations with your cabinets to add architectural interest? Looks like a really nice kitchen you have there.
