Since you live in Climate Zone 7, I would suggest one red-blooming evergreen camellia on each side of the front steps. For ease in maintenance, you might put landscaping mesh and large stone over the rest of the planting area in front of the porch. Then, you could add patio blocks over the stone and set out container plants.
