I agree. Extending the tile to the ceiling will add drama and impact. By stopping it short, it doesn't draw attention to the beautiful hood fan you've got.

I would for sure change them out. Spend a few dollars and go to home depot and get some brushed nickel. It makes a world of difference:

I wouldn't go past the tops of the cabinets, myself. Looking around the room, the cabinets all have wall space above. I'd retain that sight line. If the opposing walls were other than what you show, maybe go all the way. The way I see it, stop at the tops of the cabinets and retain that sight line.

I would go all the way up to the ceiling too. Also, the tile on the sides of the wall distract from your back wall and make the space look smaller....something to consider.

I would agree with going all the way to the top, but as you can see in your photo's, the ceiling heights in the subject kitchen are quite different than those that have been done. I also agree with the notion that the two short side wall splashes detract. I'd still stop at the topped sightline and maybe take the sides up to meet. JMO. If the ceilings met the tops of the cabinets, you'd have an entirely different look as noted in the Addition Building & Design pix.

Greg the PAINT-IT! guy makes some very good points, but I would extend the backsplash to avoid leaving it look unfinished.
