Bones: cooked or raw?

Yesterday at the dog park, we got into an argument about giving dogs those large bones. One guy was telling this lady that she needed to boil the bones to get them soft. From all I've read, bones should be given raw to avoid splintering. I don't have experience first hand because I don't feed my dog bones. But I did tell the man that bones should be given raw from all that I have read about feeding bones. Am I misinformed? I know there is a lot of misinformation on the web. One hardly knows what to believe anymore. The guy ended up getting snippy with me and acted like I was crazy for suggesting raw bones. By bones, he was talking about the large beef soup bones.
