Potting orchids that are on cork mounts

Hi guys,

I live in Florida, south of Tampa. Within the 10 years that I've been here the oak trees have really shaded my fenced in small back yard, not to mention that the people on either side of me (townhouse situation) has complained about the roots of the orchids growing on their side of the fence. Between the lack of sun and my neighbors, I thought that I would take the cork mounts off the fence and put them in pots. This way I could please my ******* neighbors as well as relocate the pots. I have also thought of growing them in the lanai under lights. Anyway, my question is: would you put the orchid on the cork mount in bark or try to grow them in s/h? My way of thinking that the bark would hold too much water and the s/h would be ok. Any advise and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The type of pot and what is inside the pot should formulate to you and your environment. A shame you can't just leave them be. Before you dismantle the wall please send a picture. I would not disturb the roots as best you can. I would put the mount in a hanging wooden basket. Give it the same light and water. Add blocks of wood in the basket so the mount stays in one spot. A wood shop or a construction site may have wood scraps. Or something else.

If there are rhizomes growing off the slab there may be division opportunity. Being mounted. you must be watering every day? A slab in a hanging basket would be easy and least shock to the plants. You will need to create something for the baskets to hang on. Might need a touch of carpentry. Do it in front of that fence. They like it there...Good luck

Semi Hydro. I was thinking of putting the orchid on the mount in a pot that had the s/h rocks/stones (can't think of a better way to describe). Or maybe I could just stick the mount in a clay pot? And let it be.

I've got one Laelia that has roots growing off the mount and has mostly attached itself to the fence. gggrrr. I don't water daily. Never thought of hanging a wooden basket. Although, I will still have to pull, ever so gently, the roots that have attached themselves to the fence. What a stupid a$$ idea I had of mounting them and then putting them on the fence.

It will be OK. Before you try to move them give them a lot of water then more water. That will make them more flexible for less root breakage.

With no medium in hot Florida you could water every day. And you could continue with the mounts in a basket. If they get a chance to dry out, they will like the water daily. If you do that daily it is important to water in the morning.
