st. augustine is a popular lawn grass in that area. it has wide blades and is tolerant of moderate shade but your site may be too shady for it.

daphne is a lovely area with some beautiful old homes and gardens.

Welcome to Alabama! I would be so bold and suggest less lawn. And consider planting a few shrubs, like one of my favorites, tea olive - Osmanthus fragrans

Congrats on your move! I think you're going to hate winter a lot less. The hardest part of gardening is getting rid of the grass. Sounds like the beginnings of a beautiful shade garden!

I agree with Jeff and Red. It your yard is very shady, no grass is going to be successful, but St. Augustine or centipede are good shady choices to try. You could try a ground cover, such as vinca or monkey grass, but even those need some sun. The only things I've managed to grow under the live oak in my back yard are holly ferns and Autumn ferns (and some weeds) but I still have to keep the tree limbed up so that they get a smidgen of morning sun and late afternoon sun. The holly ferns stay green throughout the winter, which is nice. Home Depot will have them for about $5 in the spring. Walmart had the Autumn ferns last year for the same price.

I am also in AL...not as far south though...and have had great luck with emerald zoysia in a pretty shady yard. The downside is you will have to get it as sod.
