The End(?) - Week Ten

Very much hoping that all will be finished this week. Contractor initially said he'd be here with one other "late morning, early afternoon" today. I got a call from him at around 3:30 saying they'd be here at four or so. They've got other work going and need to squeeze me in. They're still here now at 6pm.

Still to do: Finish shower, do edging/transition strips on floor, finish building exterior steps & a handful of other odds and ends.

The shower is grouted! The door still needs to be installed. GC says I should be able to use the shower tomorrow night.

Builder will be coming in the next day or so to finish the steps & other exterior stuff stucco.

GC just noticed that toe kick for the pantry is missing (I hadn't even noticed.) He said that we were short that one, and he'd forgotten all about it, but that he'd reach out to the KD to order it, but it might take a few weeks for it to come in & for him to get back here to install it.

Right now, they're adjusting the fridge. No small feat with my uneven floors.

I've been missing the updates! Don't want it to end, but really want to see the FLOOR REVEAL.

    Nice looking shower!

I left at 6:10 & guys were here. I know they were hoping to finish today (excluding exterior stuff, done by a sub,) and when they didn't get here until 4:20 (and were still saying they hoped to be done today) I knew that was unlikely. Floor isn't done yet, but everything else appears to be.

I got back from my yoga class at 8 and the door is on the shower!

I've got to give the shower grout and whatever else 24 hours to dry, but it looks like I can take a shower tomorrow evening. WooHoo!

They also adjusted the fridge and put the toe kick on the dishwasher. Since the pantry toe kick is missing, they'll have to come back anyway, but the floor is not yet done either, so, no floor reveal for a bit. GC said that this week is booked solid, so I don't expect him back to finish the floor until next week.

Several weeks ago, I mentioned that the lower drawer on my range looked odd - there was a big gap between the top of the drawer and the bottom door of the oven, and it was crooked to boot. I'd called Whirlpool customer service and the agent told me that in the official photo of the range, a gap is visible and that's normal. My GC & KD both thought it looked odd. I scheduled a service visit, but cancelled due to scheduling. I finally called to reschedule.

The guy came out today & said that the gap was bigger (and more crooked) than he's seen. He kept playing around with it - no parts were broken or missing. Eventually, he said that my uneven floors were to blame. He adjusted it some & made it better, though not great. He then said that I could modify the plastic drawer guides by drilling a new hole to raise up the levels, but that an easier way would be to just get felt pads and stick them on top of the glides to raise the level - I did it a little, and will get more felt pads. The door works fine, so it's all about aesthetics. It does look better now, and if I raise it too much it will get in the way of opening the oven door.

Builder will probably be here Wednesday or Thursday to finish exterior stuff. I'm assuming GC (or one of his guys) will be here next week to finish the floor & install the pantry toe kick (if it gets in) next week.

In the meantime, I've moved the kitty litter box back to the basement, and tonight, after feeding, I brought their food back downstairs. I've got their water bowl in its new place between the DW and the table. Now, I've got to figure out where I'm going to feed them.

Ahhhhhhh.... time to kick back and enjoy both of your new spaces! Congrats!

so close! The tile work in the shower is really nice. Can't wait to see the final product.

Enjoy that first shower in your lovely new shower!!!

The cats look happy and even though I've been following along closely, I'm still looking forward to a real Reveal.

What a simple, interesting fix for that range drawer. Glad it worked out so easy for you.

I see your Amazon order came, there's the roll up drying rack, right?

Can the kitties eat semi-al fresco on the bay or in the kitchen window?

Bpathome - the first of two (or was it second of three?) Amazon order(s) came in... Yup, that's the drying rack!

Kitties can eat on window sills. I'd been considering no longer feeding cat(s) on counters, so I guess I'll decide tomorrow about that sink window sill...

Ya know, that explanation for the range drawer just makes no sense to me. If the floor is not level, why would only the drawer be off kilter? Isn't the frame of the drawer attached to the rest of the stove? And the feet adjustable to make the stove level? Sorry, my brain just doesn't let go of that sort of thing. I am glad that you found an easy fix.

I had a problem with the deli drawer and one crisper drawer sort of hanging up, not gliding smoothly ( my frig was a scratchndent purchase) The repairman came out & could not find the problem. A few weeks ago, I emptied the frig and took it completely apart to clean it and I found the problem -- the frame that holds the deli drawer has a crack in it. We are out of warranty but I am going to try anyway since I called them about the issue when it was still covered.

That did occur to me, raee, but, since the felt worked to make it look better, and drawer functions fine, I just decided not to worry about it. I went out & bought a roll of felt, and adjusted the drawer heights. Looks fine to me.

We've been having some nice weather, so I opened the kitchen window for the first time in a week or so. At first, I couldn't get it to open & thought maybe it was painted shut. Then, I managed to open it and saw that the trim was painted while the window was closed, and it left an unpainted border. I texted a photo to the GC & said to add it to his finishing list.

No one was here yesterday or today. Tomorrow, builder is coming to finish the back steps and stucco work. I'll be glad to have that done! I hope that GC (or one or two of his guys) will be here next week to do the floor trim & some odds & ends including trim painting one day next week.

I've also re-opened the Airbnb biz starting next week - and already have a couple bookings for late October/early November. I've been holding out on posting new photos on my Airbnb listing until the floor is uncovered.

Do you have a roll-up screen in your window?

Bpathome - no, I don't even know what a roll-up screen is. The screen is on the window in the above photo, though maybe not visible. It's a solid, framed piece that can come out.

Builder & helper were here today to do the steps & stucco work.

While they were working, I spent much of the day puttering in the living room - spackling holes, touching up paint, hanging the new Roman shade and re-arranging art. I posted a LR update here.

Builders are leaving, now. The steps look great, and they were able to use the sandstone window sill as the top step!

Builder said that GC will finish up top of step, just below door when he returns. Oh, I took a shower this morning! My first shower in almost two months! It was great, and that little shelf is perfect not only for shampoo & stuff but to put the foot on while washing legs. Yay!

I did notice some water coming out from under the door (and, to be fair, I think that happened before, too.) GC had texted me Tuesday night, and then again last night asking how the shower was working. I was a little embarrassed to tell him I hadn't used it yet.

I texted him this morning & told him about the water drip (and that I think it used to happen, too.) He called & told me he forgot to tell me that I'm missing the door sweep, that should have been on the door. I told him that I removed that years ago - not sure why, maybe it was coming off, or damaged, or something. Unfortunately, I think I threw it away.

I went to Home Depot & Lowe's this morning hoping it was a standard item: It's not. Lowe's recommended an independent plumbing supply place, but when I called them, they said they'd have to know the manufacturer & order it. The door has no manufacturer noted on it. GC said when he comes down he'll have a look & figure out something: he's good at that.

GC will be here some time next week (not Monday) to finish up odds & ends, including floor - and then, I think, it will be done - well, maybe...

Try calling a glass store. The kind of place that installs custom cut mirrors and glass shower doors and all that. They cut and install the door sweeps on showers all the time.

Steps look awesome! Piece by piece it's all coming together!

    Carrie B thanked tmy_jax

It's great to see all the bits and pieces getting finished up. It looks like the cats are choosing to eat at the table with you - no?

Jillius - I think I'd be really nervous about having glass so low on a moving part near my bare feet. But if that's the only way I can get something to stop the drip...

Blfenton - I'm feeding the cats on the floor, so far. My skittish kitty really doesn't like it, though. Have got to find a place to make him feel more secure.

Carrie, the door sweep is made of rubber or silicone or something like that. Not glass. It's just that glass companies provide door sweeps along with hinges, door handles and everything else that's part of a glass shower door because they install the whole shebang.

Oh, I see. Mine was made of aluminum, with a strip of vinyl (or silicone, or something like that.) I thought you were suggesting glass. Thank you. I'll see if I can find that kind of store in my city.

Thanks, everyone! I like that builder was able to use the sandstone window sill. I think he was a little ambivalent about using it, though, in the end, I think he was pleased with how it worked out - and the step works perfectly in terms of how I use it - dimension wise & rise & putting one foot in front of the other.

I put a few containerized plants out there temporarily to get a sense of what it would look like with plants. I know y'all pretty much know my entire first floor by heart by now :) but you can see my front door & couch (and cat in the door.)

Today, I hope to do a bit of research to find that drip rail for the shower door.

I love your plants, the door and your steps! It looks so beautiful and lush.

Some of you know that I've been ordering small indispensable kitchen gadgets from Amazon. I've held out on getting Prime, so, what I tend to do is keep a wish list going, and when there's enough stuff to qualify for free shipping, and/or I really want a particular item soon, I place an order.

Just now, the Fed Ex guy rang my bell. He had an envelope for me to sign for - I expressed surprise at the envelope (rather than a package) & he said "you weren't expecting something from Venezuela?"

"No," I said, "just a few things from Amazon." The envelope contained one gray four dollar fine point Sharpie (I got a brown one, too shipped with other items in the package) for quartz touch ups. The Fed Ex man was still here when I opened it & he said "that must have cost $50 to ship express from Venezuela."

Maybe you accidentally ordered that one from the actual Amazon rainforest? Easy mistake to make.

Everything is looking so good, Carrie!

When you figured out that they painted your window shut, did you smack your forehead and wonder, "what were they thinking?" That's what I did when, 12 yrs ago, the painters painted our front door while it was closed. We changed the color from white to a deep raspberry so when we opened the door, there was a nice white border on my raspberry door. I couldn't believe that anyone could be that stupid! I'm not a pro and I know you don't do that.

Oh, yeah, I made them repaint the door. Even so, there was always a noticeable paint ridge around the edges of the door. Ask your GC to tell the painters to lightly sand the line between paint and non-paint areas on your window so that you don't end up with a paint ridge, too.

Lisa_a - in this case, the painter was GC's 20yo son. Good idea to ask him to sand the line so it doesn't show. I hope the kid's dad isn't too hard on him. Working for your dad's got to be tough (I worked for my mom long ago.)

I'd forgotten it was your GC's son who did the painting. Okay, we'll cut him some slack. =)

The back steps are great and the plants make it all look so inviting. Yay on using your shower again. I'm sure your GC will figure something out for you on the door sweep...until then, keep a big towel on the floor to catch the drips. I'm so excited for you that you're reaching the end. Still need to see your kitchen floor!!!

Have to agree w/ bpathome... this has been such a great journey to follow along. Confession: I only started with the "Week x" updates and went digging back to your original layout threads... and windows... and lighting... and.... :o) Thanx for including us!

tmy_jax - so flattered that you searched my posts! I have all the updates, starting at demo 8/17 saved, if you missed any that you want to see.

Carrie - thanx for the offer.... may take you up on that sometime. For years I've been planning & saving up $$$. I was looking to tear down a wall, make a larger "L" and cram an island in. Over the years each time a poster would ask for layout help similar to mine, the layout gurus would chime in with "that space is perfect for a galley". So, I went through multiple iterations of a galley layout, moving fridge, range, sink & DW. Eventually coming up with a nearly identical layout to yours, give or take a few inches. Watching your kitchen threads has been like watching my own 2-dimensional drawings come to life. It's totally convinced me that it's the perfect layout for my situation. Thanx again!

    Carrie B thanked tmy_jax

tmy_jax - so glad my path has been helpful to you! There are a bunch of things that make this galley layout perfect for me. One is that entire-floor focal point of the back door. I can't say enough about how much it improves the look & feel of the floor, and makes my little house look and feel so much bigger.

Another is the absence of corners. I've seen so many conversations here about how to handle the corners. And folks have come up with very good ways to use corners for useful storage for large items, etc., but I think they're just not the most convenient or efficient use of space - even when they are the best option. Not having any corners really makes it feel like I'm using every inch efficiently.

And, while my galley is about as wide as you'd want a galley to be (about 12',) the fact that it is wide - that there's all that open space in the middle - feels open & luxurious. My entire household is enjoying it. :)

I'm sure the kitties think you put in the window wall just for them. :)

Yes, your wall of glass is such an awesome, dramatic change. My space is 10' wide, so I'd have ~63" aisle... not ideal, but I'll call it "spacious" :o)

Tmy - 10' sounds perfect for a galley kitchen!
