long running kitchen remodel

last modified: 11 years ago

This was a long running project, it started first with the self designed/custom built stove exhaust fan, as seen in the island floor pic, in 2011. I lost a lot of storage with the change, so I saved the cabinets so I could re-install them somewhere else. I really didn't have room to put them back up in the original floor space, so, in 2012, I decided to bump out the wall into the laundry room behind the kitchen just deep enough for the cabinets, creating a cabinet wall with a narrow countertop. My kids kept telling me that the wall paper that was on the wall, was out of style and I should just paint it. But, I loved it when I put it up and I still loved it. So, color me a stick in the mud, but I am not one to just follow the current trends so, I kept the original wallpaper as much as I could. But, I had to cover the new wall between the cabinets with tile, since I could not find the wall-paper to match. The tile co-ordinated well with the wall paper, so I was happy with it. At that time my countertops were white laminate, so in 2013, I decided to replace my counter tops and opted for the black pearl granite. I love the way it offset the cabinets. I finally partially gave in on the wall paper on the backsplash areas and in February of this year, after much research on DIY tile installation, I and my daughter installed the Crema Marfil 2" marble backsplash. I looked at several different mosaic tile to try to spice up the Crema Marfil, but didn't really like anything. Then, looking through Amazon, I found some more of the tile I had installed in the bump-out and used it to create the band of color through the backsplash, coordinating with the bump-out, drawing the whole kitchen together. Every time I look at it I am so pleased with the way it worked out. At the same time I found the fruit marble mosaic on Ebay and had it custom made to fit in the space between the cabinets above the desk cubby, additionally tying the fruit theme with my beloved wall paper on the bump out wall. I had the wall plugs moved and installed Plug Mold multi-outlet strips mounted on chair rail (to provide an angle for comfort) at the top of backsplash under the cabinets, to create the un-interrupted backsplash. I had LED strips installed above and below the cabinets to provide accent lighting for my tin collection and even illumination on the counter work areas. In July, I then had the new porcelain tile floor installed, which I had purchased 2014 from the online Fast-Floors store. I have only one more thing to do to be completely finished, shelving to match the cabinets on the right side of the window. Any suggestions on anything I haven't addressed?
