Definitely an area rug. I would pull the colors from the pillows, and have more than one color in the rug...a design, flowers, stripe, just make the rug interesting and it will add to the room and make the space much more welcoming.

Great, will try a rug in the space. Also any ideas on chairs around the round table.. staying with a modern theme.

I would add a rug... maybe a sissal 8x10 It will add contrast between the coffee table and the wood on the floor... you could bind it in one of the colors of the pillows... anchoring the space.
For the tulip round table see attachments ... you can do many things. I would get a chair
and play around with it. Have fun!
