Sofa backs to fireplace

I rearranged my furniture now I have a empty space behind my couch this is the only way we could watch TV comfortably without putting TV over fireplace and have an open space to Kitchen.
My question is should I move the sectional back so the fireplace is totally covered or should I leave it like that and place something behind the couch????
and if what should I put behind it don't mind the floor lamp I will move that to another room, thank you.

views.from kitchen would like to keep this area open
  • 10 years ago

Can you arrange it like this?

Susan 2494 I had it this way it totally blocks.the traffic to the kitchen and makes my family room look so boxy
    thank you for your suggestion

Wonderful pictures! Can you successfully split sectional so that they flank the TV and FP. Get rid of the connecting corner section. Ideally I think two love seats would work better. If not, there no good solution with this furniture unless you get the TV up over FP. Then two focal points in one room become one. Hiding FP will look wrong.

I would say that the room looking boxy is much better than the arrangement you have now. According to your photos and the arrangement now, it appears that you would have access from the kitchen to the seating area. Yes, part of the opening would be blocked by the sofa, but still room between the chair and sofa for entering the area. The chair would have to go in the corner by the 1/2 wall.

If you want to send the dimensions of the room and size of sofa, there might be a way to arrange this better.

miacometlady thanks for your input, can't separate sectional it has a metal hook which holds the two pieces together visually it would look very bad my husband likes this arrangement I am worried about that fireplace covered by the couch If I have the couches parallel to each other viewing the TV would be an issue.

Susan 2494 thank you for your suggestion, really don't like to close off the kitchen.
The family room is 20 feet long and 15 wide.
sectional is Lady shaped facing right

What a beautiful fireplace and brick wall. I would want that to be the focus of the room...hate covering or blocking it. Agree with Susan's suggested arrangement of the furniture. Do you have pictures of how you had it before?

candle12355, I actually love it that way. I have the same exact floor plan in my home. This way, you can see your beautiful fireplace, mantel, and brick wall-allowing it to be the focal point of your room. I think this arrangement looks very cozy. And, I really like the chair and floor lamp in the corner next to the tv. Perfect, IMO!

Thank you so much, you have such a beautiful home I will try to change it back only if husband agrees!

Oh thanks! And, I must say it felt a bit awkward for us at first. I felt like there wasn't enough space between the sofa and opening to the kitchen, but I really think it's the only and best arrangement.

Your home is beautiful, too. I think your arrangement was perfect. Good luck convincing hubby :-)

Candle, that arrangement is so much better. IMO the sofa does not close off the kitchen area, only makes the entry into the room a bit smaller, but gives the living room much needed access to the beautiful FP. And keep the mantle arrangement you have now. Looks much better.

I might suggest 2 things. After moving the furniture, do you have room on current TV wall for a console and still have a walkway behind sectional?

And you really need a longer console for the TV, whether you move it or not. The console should be 25% longer than TV size.

Here is new arrangement with room size 15"x20". I assume the FP wall is the 15 footer.

Adding a couple or at least 1 lamp to console and a large mirror or piece of art, will complete the room.

I know this doesn't solve your dilemma, but I like your old arrangement. You have a beautiful fireplace to showcase and everyone can view the TV easily with this set up. It's nice, warm, and cozy. The new set up allows hall traffic passing through to block the TV for those watching it.

So the question is: Why is it so important to have more open access from the kitchen?

If you want to keep the new set up and don't necessarily want to waste the space behind it, I would suggest a console table.

One bright spot for hubby, he can now see the TV while he is cooking. I assume he has taken over that as well as the decorating.

With the advent of flat screen TV's there is mounting technology that will create more versatility for viewing in open concept homes.

I suggest you utilize the knee wall opening between the living and dining room with a 360 turning pole mount TV. This will allow you to angle the TV to the living room, dining room or kitchen. On the reverse side of the TV - artwork. Integrated in the wall under the TV are the console and game boxes.

This would give you the openness and a great traffic flow while not eliminating the fireplace as focal to the room.

Looks great! I love it. If you like things symmetrical, maybe you could add 2 lamps. If not, consider adding a lamp on one side and some pictured frames or candles on the other side with a bowl in the middle. I also love idea of placing a tall orchid on one side.

And one more question should I leave my windows in Kitchen the way there are or should I hang some curtains or valances, thank you.

Thumbs up on the arrangement of the furniture. Perhaps another 2 art pieces over the table and something under it.

You need to lower your mirror

Thank you Jillian! that's a good idea with the storage under the table.

Leave the windows the way they are. The plantation shutters are lovely all by themselves.

Thank you Susan, that looks great!!Love how you always do that.

Would love to see your TV on a credenza instead of a TV stand. One 25% larger than the set would complete your room. Please go ahead and lower that art to 5" above the mantel. I thought we took care of that several days ago. How's the shopping going for replacing the builder's dome lights? Just a few more tweaks and all will be well.

    I like the basket idea.

I would get a lamp with a skinner base and rather plain. Your mirror should be the star.

That's great Susan!! Really love this setting
  • 10 years ago

Leave windows as they are now. It's a good thing you have.

And BTW, thank you for moving the furniture. The room looks great. Nice job.

Thank you guys for all your help and suggestions really makes everything much easier.

The lamp is from Kirklands $40. Make sure it's tall enough whatever you buy. Can't find it on their website, but several nice ones. Check it out.

I will go there tomorrow and see what they have will post pictures after I am done.
    Thank you!!

candle12355, I love the plantation shutters, and would keep them unless you are trying to add color or softness. If so, roman shades would be pretty. An important consideration when choosing window treatments is whether or not you need privacy or are trying to control light. Plantation shutters are perfect for that reason.

I'm not sure about your budget, but Horchow has some beautiful lamps. I love your floor lamp in the corner of your room. Where did you get it? You may want to find something similar to repeat the look of it.

Here are some of may favorites.

Karen,I have no issue with privacy backing to woods just thought maybe to add some more color and softness but I thing you are right they look better the way they are just need to change my light fixture over breakfast table and sink area don't like them at all.
Love the table lamps thank you,I got my floor lamp from amazon I really love it I have a two story family room and that lamp really brightens up my whole room no need of other lights in the room.
Any suggestions for the lights budget friendly please. Thanks you very much.

I noticed that you have plantation shutters in your living room. I think having shutters in both the living room and kitchen makes your space feel cohesive. You have a lovely home.

Like the lamp suggested by Susan. I find that you can get such great buys at Kirklands. However, with lamps, sometimes the shades need to be changed...I found 2 crystal lamps there not too long ago. The lamps were a great quality but the shades made them look dingy. Once I purchased new shades for them, it really looked like a spent a lot of money.....a great trick that can make a huge difference.

Also, Pottery Barn, TGMax, and Home Goods have lots of great lamps if any of these stores are in your area. If I see any budget friendly lamps that I think would complement your beautiful mirror, I'll send links your way.

Thank you Karen,I do have a Kirkland,Home Goods.... All close by my house is just so overwhelming when I get there soo many choices ,since I have talked to you guys I think I know what I want thanks for all your suggestions and help.

When I was checking your shutters, I saw the table chandelier, didn't say anything, so glad to hear you don't like it either LOL

Here are some options. If you like any, I can hang over table for you.

Susan you are the best!!Look at that so beautiful and perfect, ohhh I hate that light fixture can't wait to change it it looks like a birdcage love, love the one you have picked that makes a statement. Thanks
  • 10 years ago
Susan what about the one over the sink??
    What do you guys think?

Sorry about missing the question about light over sink. It is not bad and if it is functional then leave it. Your console looks FAB. Still think you should lower the mirror. Is bottom of mirror 5-7" over table surface. Looks too high. I would move lamps a little closer towards mirror. Leave the others as is.

The pieces on the top should be more in a group. so moving the lamps closer to the orchid and tray will eliminate the look of them just being lined up. The heights and different shapes are great.

Susan 2494 Thank you!!My husband will move the mirror tomorrow for me and don't worry about the last post I have ordered a new light fixture for the breakfast table and sink area can't wait for them to arrive.
This what I have ordered the first image is for over the sink and second image is for breakfast table.
