The white tile floor is the main culprit here. Followed by whatever creation that is above the range. A floating vinyl floor and tearing down the creature in order to do a nice stainless chimney hood would do wonders. Tackling the lighting grid should also be on the list.

The drapes are a fire hazard against the range as well. Dump them.

Or do a total gut to get a more functional layout and start over.

Not sure how far you're wanting to update, but if you're looking for a surface update and not looking to do a gut I'd paint the cupboards a grey/taupe (depending on what the rest of your place is like...) or even a lighter color that will still contrast your counters and remove your curtains and do a backsplash - I think those things would make a big difference.

Get rid of the florescent light box it will back the whole kitchen feel bigger. Ditch the window treatments and replace the range hood cabinet with a venting mircrowave. Add new hardware and a backsplash. Paint cabinets if they are not your style.
