How about a soft gray counter? Or a creamy beige with gold undertones? Too bad you don't like black because I think charcoal would look so sharp!

decocco--thanks for replying. believe me, i'm trying to find a soft gray but nothing yet. a friend said i shouldn't introduce gold since there's no gold in the tile. i'm assuming you think the TB clashes with the tile?

I think it's busy, but that's a personal preference. If you like it, I say go for it--your interiors should make YOU smile, not me. Just keep other elements quiets if you should ever sell. The more I think about it, the more I think it could be a very rich look.

sorry, i won't take up more of your time after this. . . i love how the granite looks. the problem is, i can't imagine how it will look once installed in my kitchen with the tile. this is what i'm wrestling with.

The fact that the slab yard won't give you a sample is distressing to me. You're absolutely right--it will look different in your kitchen. Can you try a different vendor for the granite? Or could they print you out a color copy that really looks true? It's hard to tell on my computer screen, but I see some purple in your granite picture and that's making me nervous!

there's definitely lavender/purple/blue-gray streaks in the stone. i went to different stone yards but 1. not all of them carry the TB and 2. none of them have samples of it and 3. most of the slabs in other places are more gold. the pics i took really are not great.
i'm thinking of throwing in the towel and going with concrete counters.

i love the reds! i agree that you need to pick something you can live with..it's very hard to pick backsplashes and countertops. i just went through that! you do need samples and you need to look at them at during different times of the day/night.

May I suggest a consultation with an interior designer in your area? Many designers will come out for an hour or two at an hourly rate. Look up the Interior Design Society (IDS) or ASID chapters in your area and see what you find. This is a perfect example of how some quick, professional guidance is worth it's weight in gold!

deccoco, i think you're right. thanks for the suggestion. zero34, i appreciate the feedback about concrete. if the price is not prohibitive and if the guy can assure me about stain-resistant seal, i may go in that direction.

Concrete is not stain resistant and may give you a more contemporary look than you're going for. You obviously like pattern and color. Concrete is the opposite!

there are alternatives to granite; you might like to check out quartz or even Corian for the color and texture you want. there are lots of choices and it takes a little time. if you can take samples of what you already have with you it might help, but any reputable business would give you samples. i have left over large pieces of backsplash and samples from the countertops.

You're free to disagree with me--Houzz is all about design discussions! I love it! Funny to see this today because i was in a couple of slab yards just this morning and they had NO samples of the granites that I chose for a client. So there! No samples for me to show my clients. Bummer. But I got them to email excellent pictures of the slabs to me and I'll go to my fabricator to see if they have some samples I can borrow. I didn't see TB today, but I did see several patterns with nice bits of burgundy in them and soft splashes of purple here and there. It looked great on a white/gray/cream sort of background. I'm thinking of Snowdrift, White Galaxy and River White. Of course, your stone yards may call them by different names. And I agree, zero34, that concrete could be stained many colors, so that might be a great alternative, especially since it's less expensive. As for quartz and solid surfaces like Corian, there are tons of choice, but in my area, it's currently more expensive than granite (my, how times have changed).

I ran into this conversation today looking for something else... Looks like we have similar floor tile, and I already have a granite that is sort of dark red... and trying to come up with a good solution for cabinet color - would white cabinets work between these two stones? What did you choose for your countertop? Do you have photos? Here is a current photo for our new kitchen, but as I said, we are making some changes. I would look to a brown granite with more consistent color and less movement. I love the matte look of this leathered antique brown granite.

I would lighten up the pallete in the counters, backsplash, and cabinets to avoid a dark kitchen....Go with the color of one of the 2 lowest middle tiles in the picture--say the one on the right for the backsplash and the other for the cabinets. A soft medium solid gray for the countertops....matte finish.Good luck!....or have you already decided? you posted 18 months ago!

I agree with Rob, concrete would look amazing with this floor! It is beautiful, and you don't need another patterned material to compete with it. Get something as plain as possible and let them be your focal point in this room!

Concrete can go in a modern direction, an "old world" direction, cottage direction etc. it all depends on your other furnishings. Your floor is not modern but it certainly is cottage or "old world" looking!

I agree with Michigammemom, the leather finish on granite is spectacular, if you don't like the brown, which I love, you can leather a nice Artic White that has a cream not a white background. The leather finish on black granite is a lot easier to keep clean than a honed or a polished finish. I am currently doing a leather finish on my countertops at home in black and also doing leather finish on stone for the cottage. The leather finish really softens the look of the stone. If you decide to go with a cream and black or brown, I would look at theis finish.
I would suggest you go to the yard and ask them who has purchased the stone you like and go to them, they will have a sample and will possibly leather it for you.
