Mark, If the trees are important to you, then I would dig up and repot in gritty mix. Keep them in a sunny site for as long as possible.

Oh I did that too. I yanked them out last week, though, before the first killing frost. I left one there that I was going to cull anyway, to see how it does after the frost. Well. Not very well, it turns out.

I am not sure how cold it gets in Zone 8 but if you are digging it out, just pot it up as usual. They don't really notice. Mine are back in pots under lights, like nothing happened. They definitely had more roots after a summer in the ground (they didn't have much, going in).

Thanks Rick and Pagan! I went ahead and dug them out. The smaller plant had more roots which is good, and the larger plant was iffy. When I planted it, I had just trimmed some roots due to rot, and it appears as tho more rotted. There were healthy roots growing which is good, but I trimmed off the bad ones.

It looks like your soil is a hard sand type which is not a good soil for them, I would plant them in pots with a 60% perlite, 30% coir, 10% non-porous stone mix. If you like the tall caudex then plant them in a deeper pot, but if you want them to grow a more bulbous form you need to plant them almost on top of the soil in a very shallow pot, think bonsai. That will force the plant to grow out and not down, creating that big gnarly root ball. Fertilize them with a high middle number fertilizer a month after bringing them in, but don't fertilize at all once they start to bloom. They most likely will not bloom until March. It is ok if your leaves fall off once you bring them indoors, they should sprout back in no time.

This is mine yesterday, October 26, 2015 inside. I plan on moving to a shorter bowl on my next repot. Good luck with yours, try Dyna Grow for a fertilizer along with Super-Thrive. It looks like your sand doesn't drain too well and doesn't have many nutrients. The potting mix I mentioned above doesn't have organic material so you need to supplement or the plants won't prosper.
