Here are the security doors that I have narrowed down to. We're also unsure of which color to pick: maroon, cooper, desert sand, black, or white.

Can you step back and take pictures. I don't understand the space. This narrow alley is your front yard. Is half yours and half your neighbors? Are you looking for privacy fence, screens, planting?

Yes, we share the space; my half is our front yard. We have a home owners assoc (HOA) which does not allow fencing between the homes.

My problem is with what I see when sitting in my living room looking out the front door...the neighbors house!
I'm open to potted plants or a movable screening.

I would go with the black door, middle top row because your fencing is black wrought iron.

Potted plants around the doorway would help. Otherwise, I don't see much that you can do. One approach is to wander the neighborhood and see if anyone has come up with an interesting solution.

In CA there are houses with sideways-sunburst doors. I like those - or your current, since the others seem so deco or mission or idk....

in white, to echo the window edging / or tan, the outdoors. Others too dark, even though part of gate has black... if your door is left open, imo I wouldn't want black metal...

Excellent idea of Dee's for bird items that hang from a shepherd's hook... maybe 3 in a row [the ones that have 2 or 3 hooks on 1 stem might poke a neighbor?!]....

You might take a look at Japanese inspired gardens. They can do wonders with a sliver of space like that layering different plants, creating focal points, and creating the illusion of space. Can you put a trellis or ornaments on the neighbor's wall (with permission of course)?

BTW, what brand of security door are you looking at? These are a lot more attractive than most I have seen. I like the simplier more modern ones (top right and lower left) but they are all nice, and it looks like you have a pretty blank slate to work with, so any will be OK. I think a bright color of some sort would help make the entrance more inviting, especially since it is quite a distance from the parking area.

How about some for of water garden with plants.

Maybe a cable rail trellis, stretched horizontally from the separating post between the two gates to the end of the drive way. You'd have to install a post at the drive way of course. Then place potted vine plants at the bottom to create a live wall along the property line. Edible plants would be great. Flowering vines.. etc.. Mmm no fencing between houses makes you have to think outside the box. How do all the neighbors feel about that? If most don't like it, maybe start a petition to make some changes to HOA requirements..

- I never considered how other neighbors handled this dilemma, so we walked the neighborhood and got a few good ideas.
- The sunburst door matches the "southwest" style of our home which is popular in CA and AZ -this is my choice.
- Our neighbor is a sweet person is open to letting us extending our design onto her side!!
- The Japanese garden is a great idea because it's a look that we have always liked but never considered it here.
- As for the vines- that was my original idea but did not know how to accomplish it without making the small space look too over done - now I have some ideas!!

By the way, the door brand is Titan and they are sold at Lowes and Home Depot.
