Diverter Question

I'm about ready to start the plumbing on my little bath remodel with a tub/shower combo. I'll have a tub spout, fixed shower head, and a handheld.

My question is regarding the diverter. I'm using the Kohler MasterShower line, with the K-728-K transfer valve. This valve can be configured as a 2 or 3 way (or any combo of 2). The trim kit I bought has a tub spout with built-in diverter, but I think I would prefer to have it plumbed through my transfer valve instead.

Is it OK to do this? What would be the advantages or disadvantages? I've read all of Mongo's fabulous thread, but I think my brain is scrambled at this point :(

    No one has any preference as to spout diverters vs. in wall diverters?

    I'm not familiar with the model you have but if I have a diverter already I would prefer my tub spout to be turned on via the diverter. Keep in mind that the tub spout you probably have would always have to be in the open position and the rough in would need to be rerouted via the diverter. The other option is to get a tub spout without the built in diverter.

    Thank you, renos. Yeah, my thought is to route the tub spout to the in-wall diverter. It seems that the only spout diverters I've ever used leaked cold water on my feet while showering, so I'm not fond of them.

    Once concern is that the trim kit I selected does not have a non-diverter spout available. I don't really want to have to go with a mismatched spout, though. I wonder if there is a way to disable the diverter in the spout, so that I don't have to worry about someone pulling it?

    I am not familiar with that line either (I used Hansgrohe) but it seems odd that the trim kit doesn't have a non-diverter spout if the valve has a diverter in it already. If it were me, I'd find a non-diverter tub spout of some kind, but that's because seeing the useless diverter on the spout would bug me.

    I'm sure you can use a clear waterproof epoxy to to keep the knob in the open position. I'd also put a dab on the inside as a back up.

    In general many manufactures have diverter-less tub spouts in different finishes, you can always purchase one that closely resembles your trim kit. Only problem is price due to a one off purchase.

    I personally like the cleaner lines of not having a built in diverter on the tub spout, but as they say, to each there own.

    Thanks, renos. I'll keep looking for a non-diverter spout that will look nice with my setup, but if I don't find anything I'll give give the epoxy a try. I guess it's really not a huge deal either way, as this is a tub/shower that only gets used a couple of times a year.

    Did you reach out to Kohler for recommendations within their product lines of non-diverter tub spouts? Sometimes, the product information on the web is not complete.

    I did talk to Kohler. They do not have a matching spout, and I was told that "people don't usually use a transfer valve with this trim, so a non-diverter spout wasn't made." Seriously?

    She did suggest a spout from another line, but it's entirely different from the one I had chosen.

    Same exact issue almost a decade later 😆 and kohler still doesn't make a non-diverter spout that looks good with the Bancroft line!! Curious OP what you ended up with and how you like it??

    Esme, I ended up using the Kohler Artifacts Non Diverter Wall Mounted Tub Spout with Flare Design Model: K-72791-CP


    It looks good, and I don't feel as though it looks mismatched at all.

    Thx! That is a nice choice. I decided to go with a Hydrorail with the diverter included there, and then the Kohler Bancroft spout with diverter - less hardware on the wall. We'll see how it turns out!

    @Errant_gw I'm thinking of doing something similar. I also prefer the integrated diverter in the same valve body as the cartridge rather than within the tub spout.


    Two questions for you:

    1. How is your flow rate to filling the tub? I'm hoping not to have to compromise on this. I'd like to fill the tub at 6+ GPM rather than at a shower head pace (<2 GPM).

    2. I'm guessing that when you switch from tub to shower some amount of water drains out before stopping (depending on the height of the diverter and therefore the amount of pipe that can fill with water). Have you found this to be inconvenient at all? Or par for the course?
