I think it's fine, I would straighten the table off of the angle and get a rug to go underneath it,maybe add some blinds under the curtains to give it a more casual look

i think its fine unless you are getting ready to sell, then i'd swap your beautiful drapes for solid colored ones or tonal geometrics, more whats sold right now. and sadly i'd say take down the wallpaper.

but for your personal space, its personal, and until you want something different you are good to go.

Thanks for your suggestions. The table is on that angle as the opposite wall, not shown in the first two photos, is the same angle. The table opens to an octagon shape.

I love your curtains, however, not the wallpaper. I think the wallpaper is making it look dated, otherwise it looks fine.

I would extend the drapery rods so that they can be opened wider. If you need to cover the windows at times I would add white pleated shades. I do not like the look of the drapes when they are closed.

I think the room is lovely, but the brown leather chairs are not a good fit with the lovely wall paper and fabric. It's kind of a brown hole in the center of the room. I would not add a rug, I would just replace the chairs with frame chairs and only have upholstered seats in a yellow to coordinate with the Thibaut selections.

I think your room is very elegant and certainly speaks to pre-recession decorating. But, if you have a nagging feeling that it's looking dated, I'll suggest removing the wallpaper first and keeping the drapes and see how you like it. I think you'll find the room will look fresher without the yellow stripes.

Beautiful room, I don't see a thing I'd change. It's not trendy, more of a warm and fresh looking classic, with lots of personality. Nothing to change unless you really want to.

You have a classic! My first thought was that the table was a small bridge table, not for dining. The six chairs would be crowded for a dinner party, and they are also very contemporary and masculine for the floral drapes. What I find lacking here is trim around your doorways that can hold up to the substantial crown and wainscot. Definitely put that on your "to do" list. An easy immediate update would be to spray paint the heavy drapery rods and ring clips white to match your trim for a lighter feeling. I'd remove the mirror entirely and hang the two large portraits between the two windows on the two sides of the room. They are a bit heavy together and are too wide for the sideboard. Then hang one or both of the two smaller art pieces in place of them (vertically if you use both,) flanked with your two corbels. I would consider a larger dining table and use the two apricot chairs as master's chairs at either end with something lighter and armless, but similar to the ones tedbixby suggested on the sides. The chandelier seems a bit heavy visually, so a more feminine one will add a soft touch to match the garden idea established with the floral draperies. I'd go all out for a garden ambiance, and if there are hardwood floors under that carpet I'd want to expose them. If not, you can match the ones in the foyer and then have everything refinished so the stain is consistent.

I agree, beautiful room! Before removing wall paper, carpeting and curtains, try new chairs. That alone will update the space.

Beautiful room, indeed! I like the wall paper. I also like the draperies, but I think that one should probably go, if you look for a more modern look. But the first thing I would try is actually painting the drapery rods and rings white as suggested by decoenthusiaste or switching them for something slightly lighter and white. I also find the seating a bit "heavy", but those are also very nice chairs, which I would keep. Surely I would want to look at what's under that carpet, hardwood + a rug under the table would make a huge difference.

"Dated" is a question of years - at some point, it becomes classic, and I agree, the stripey paper is timeless. I, too, would like to see the curtains open, I love bright rooms with open windows. If it were me, I would add some greenery - a fern stand, maybe,? Also, to my eye, at least in the photos, the chandelier looks a bit "heavy." Its a beautiful room, I wouldn't stress about it!

I agree with deco enthusiast ! Lovely room that could use some minor tweaks. I love the paper and window fabric. I'm sick to death of white, gray, and beige!

Thank you everyone for your thoughtful and constructive comments. I realize that my photography skills are not the best. When I shot the first two pictures yesterday afternoon, the sun was setting and I closed the draperies to make the lighting better. The table opens up to seat 8, so that's why we have 8 chairs. The 6 brown leather chairs, admittedly were in the conference room at my office prior to their arrival in our dining room. Since the drapery fabric has a fair amount of brown and the room is fairly large (14' x 14'), we figured it could handle the visual weight. Perhaps it's time for them to go back to my office. Another clarification: This home is occupied by two men. What we were headed for with this dining room was a "soft edge" masculine room for dinner/party gatherings with friends. It really doesn't get used much otherwise. Unfortunately what's under the carpet is plywood. We do plan to extend the hardwood into this room. We have plenty of rugs that we already own can go in there. Here are a few more photos in the morning light with both the table and draperies open.

my favorite magazine is House Beautiful, and your dining room scratched my between-issue itch. not a lot of these decorating sensibilities here in dilemmas, they tend to be people who have no idea what to do with garish new building trends.

I love the drapes, walls, art & mirror. The sconces are too heavy for the ceramic above- change one or the other (or remove as it may just be too much on the wall there). I agree with many other comments to remove the dark leather chairs. They look comfortable, but are too heavy for the space.

When the table is extended, it fits the room better. If you don't want to get new chairs, keep the table extended & remove the extra seating until you need it. Also, your vase fits better visually with the table extended.

The chandelier is also quite heavy. I don't have a suggestion for a replacement, but something airier would be better & not compete with those gorgeous drapes.

The chairs, I agree, could be better. The first thing I noticed was that chairs make the table look like a game table rather than a dining table. The leather doesn't work with the wallpaper or drapes.

I like the changes you've made. I have that same paper but in the raspberry colorway so I'm partial to it. I also have that fabric or something very similar to it in my vestibule in wallpaper. Traditional rooms like this IMHO never go out of style. I'm a little tired of grey grey grey. Bravo!

Your home is beautiful. A friend had beautiful custom drapery throughout her house and updated her drapery rods to narrower wrought iron. It made a huge difference.
Might suggest along with new drapery rods a lighter, less heavy and ornate chandelier. If you don't want to invest in new chairs right now, you could have fabric slip covers made. Not sure how they would work on leather. Maybe sell the chairs on Craig's List?

Tfitz, I couldn't agree with you more!!! I'm SICK of seeing gray, and I'm happy to hear there are a few of us who still love traditional!

I'm a little surprised that some think the chandelier is too big. This is a 14' x 14' room with a 9' ceiling height. The little 6 arm brass number that the builder left us with was really wimpy, even with lamp shades clipped on it.. When you start shopping for a substantial light fixture, the sticker shock perhaps dictates the outcome. I'd hate to tell you what that fixture cost 10 years ago!

My first thought was that the chandy was too heavy for the table. But once you posted the picture of the table open, with four chairs around it, I no longer thought that. Lovely room!

I love a traditional dining room but since you asked...I think you could have more drama and create a less traditional/conservative, but more classic room. Imagine your beautiful drapery with deep green walls (could paint the whole wall as well), as I don't think the wallpaper is doing justice to your furniture - although mostly everyone seemed to love. I would remove the shelf and place the furniture piece from the corner to the right wall and move your mirror above to reflect the light when candles are lit on that piece. Your art is too small for that wall anyway and if you can find another art piece, I would place one above the other between the windows. Last but not least, I would replace the curtain rods and look for a narrower rod with lovely glass finals. I love the room below - it's fun to update after 10 years of the same look.

The only thing I see that looks dated is the wall-to-wall carpeting. I'd like to see satin finished hardwood floors with an area rug. Also agree with the poster who suggested shades on the window--woven wood shades add texture and warmth.

Otherwise, beautiful room! I'm a big fan of traditional and COLOR!

The chandy is fab, use two orange and two brown chairs, remove all the extra chairs from the room, and update and get bigger wall art, remove the scrolly shelf and the mirror.

I have to agree with a previous poster though that the brown leather just don't live up to this elegant room! Maybe it's time to go consignment shopping for some beautiful classic open back wood chairs!

The room is beautiful! But I too would tweak it a bit! And personally I think dining rooms are one of the most difficult rooms to design in the entire home.

Get rid of all the leather chairs and have find four more light ones that work with the apricot side chairs as suggested above.

The chandy looks too heavy for the room; but your could spray paint all the metal to cream/white and remove the shades for a lighter look. Put the alabaster bowl back into the chandy after you paint it; it is is gorgeous. That might lighten it up a bit.

While you are at it install hardwood floors and find a yummy modern colorful area rug to balance all that tradition!

It is such an elegant room! I can see the wine flowing at all the parties you have. When you are done with the room please have a buffet party to show all your friends and family!

Very beautiful room with classic drapes and wallpaper. I think the only thing it needs in terms of updating is hardwood floors.
